PCi-324, 2408 MK1, And Cubase 4 For Mac OSX V10.4.11 Problem

Post by Atrain1us »

Hi all,

I'm having a problem getting Cubase 4 on the mac running OSX 10.4.11 to see all 24 channels of my 3 2408 v1 sound cards. The pci-324 console reports 24 ins and outs available yet the mac's audio/MIDI setup reports only ins/outs 1 and 2 active and the other 22 channels as inactive. The same goes for Cubase 4. The program also reports the first 2 ins/outs as active and the other 22 as inactive.

For the audio MIDI setup, the settings are as follows:

audio devices section:
default input: pci-324
default output: pci-324
clock source: pci-324 internal

Audio input/output:
2408-1 Analog
Format 44,100 hz
2ch-24bit

I am running the latest driver from the Motu website for the pci-324 and my system consists of a dual 1.25ghz powermac with 1.25 gigs of ram and OSX v10.4.11.

Where am I going wrong and what do I need to do to get the audio MIDI setup and Cubase 4 to see all 24 ins/outs of the 2408s?

Thanks in advance,

I have a 2408 MKII. I had the 324 card and was using Cubase SX and everything was fine. I upgraded to Cubase 4 and found out from Motu that the 324 card is not compatible 100% with Cubase 4. I had to upgrade to the 424 card. I'm glad I did because I can tell a bit of a difference in the over-all sound. And because I was using a PC, I had the 424 PCIX. Well for my PowerMac Dual Core 2.3 G5 I had to upgrade again ($300.00) to the PCIe for Mac G5's... You might want to call Motu and pose your situation to a Tech... You just might have to spend a few bucks to get the 424 card... Just find out which one you need...

As to upgrading to a PCI-424x, your best bang for the buck would probably come from purchasing a 2408mkIII core setup used on ebay.

It would cost a little more than the card upgrade, but maybe not by much.

That is the route I took and I will tell you that it sounds WAY BETTER than my old 2408mkII. I would imagine the upgrade from a MKI would be really quite a difference (although you could still run your mkI's along side -- I do with my mkII)

I got from an original owner, and he transfered ownership to me with MOTU.

If it is really a CUBASE issue, your other option may be to Crossgrade to DP from cubase, as they have a decent price for that.

Or logic studio is well priced, and is apparently like Cubase in many respects.

(OTOH I do not recall with my PCI-324/G4 set-up ever messing with Audio/MIDI set-up re ins and outs. That was all done with MOTU PCI console and inside of Logic or DP. Is it possible that some of your ins and outs are disabled in MOTU PCI console????)
