828MK3 High Pitch squeal
Hi all i got my 828mk3 on the 23-04-08 and have been putting up with the squeal that everyone except for MOTU apparently knows about.
I have emailed there tech support 3 working days ago but have had no answer does anyone know how to fix this or is everyone just putting up with it. I would return the unit and get another one but from what i hear most if not all units are effected.

chipset compatibility issues squeal, some say wireless inet squeals them too. lots of factors to consider. most people just post how pissed they are about it not working instead of providing details others need to provide any real help. good luck convincing someone to help. for those of us without issue we can only speculate without knowing comp type, os type, any externals involved.
My appologies but since this is not the first thread about this i thought most people were well aware of it. Dual 2.3 G5 OS10.4.11 Logic Pro 8.2 although it happens even if i use itunes or any audio from any application.jeff sanders wrote:chipset compatibility issues squeal, some say wireless inet squeals them too. lots of factors to consider. most people just post how pissed they are about it not working instead of providing details others need to provide any real help. good luck convincing someone to help. for those of us without issue we can only speculate without knowing comp type, os type, any externals involved.
There are also threads on the SOS forum in both Mac and PC musician sections.(therfore i assumed it was a unit issue not platform issue)
As this is not the first time this has been raised i had assumed that a solution has been found. I do not use anything wireless.
I do have a MK2 that works flawlessly. i am running the 2 as an aggreagate device but even if i dont i still have the issue. ie running the mk3 only plugged to the G5. I also use two ADA800 unit via adat again this happens whether plugged in or not.
I tried to slave the mk3 to the mk2's clock again same thing happens.
I had thought it just went away as i tracked all saturday without issue Sunday i went to mix and it was back again it can go days without happening then every 20 minutes it will do it.
I have upgraded to the latest firmware and the latest drivers i have uninstalled all previous drivers and reinstalled the new ones.
I ran the mk2 off the firewire 800 port and have continued to do so with the mk3 allthough i tried the 400 ports as well same issue.
If you need any other info to help me please let me know.

re high pitch sounds from 828mk3 followed by loss of audio
I'm new to this forum, trying to find an answer to the same problem..high pitch squeals then loss of audio, only fixed by changing the sample rate. Doesn't matter whether it's 44.1 or 48Khz, it still squeals. Only just bought the unit, have lodged a support ticket and waiting for some kind of response. Not very happy at all!
This article came up during my search which refers to the problem.

Running Logic Pro 8 on G5 dual 2.7ghz with 4 G bRam
Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Mine's been screeching for 2 months. Firmware update made no difference. Motu support advised changing optical inputs to ADAT and then back to disabled, but that seemed to make things worse for me. If yours manages to fix itself, kindly tell us how you achieved it. I've tried everything I can think of.
I have had a request in on their tech link page since 23-4-08 and had nothing back i emailed their customer support and nothing either.
Anyway this is what i have tried. i have been running it off my firewire 800 port and my firewire drives off the 400 port i swapped these around on Sunday and it has not happened since. But its too early to say that it is fixed.
Perhaps you can try another Firewire cable as well. I have an ADA800 unit connected to one of my ADAT in the other one is disabled as well as the output on the one i am using. Are you using any of the digital ins as i have a DAT connected to the SPDIF. I am using a dual 2.3 G5 what are you using.
I guess we should try and get as much info from other people maybe we can solve it ourselves. Im sure there are units out there that work. perhaps someone using a PCI(e) firewire card can tell us if this happens to them as well.
Also the ADA8000 is slaved off the mk3 wordclock. i have tried slaving it off the ADAT sync but it was still the same.
Also maybe someone slaving the mk3 off a wordclock can share their experience.

From what I've read so far about 828 mk3s that are squealing, I've noticed people that had the squealing problem, also had G5 macs. I have the 828 mk3 and I'm on a intel Mac Pro 2.66, 2gb of ram and no other firewire devices. I have a spdif in, 6 analog ins and 6 analog outs going to my Mackie 1402. I monitor from analog 1-2, not the XLR main outs to the Mackie. I haven't tried plugging in my Event PS8s into the 828 mk3 yet. I like having the external mixer for turning volumes down and other efx sends, though I 'm sure I could do it all through the 828. Also I'm always at 44.1, haven't and probably won't do any other sample rate.
My 828 is rock solid so far, just the spdif port was at the top of the cut out, but motu said that was not a defect.

I don't have FW800 so my 828 and LaCie drives are both FW400. Both direct (no bus) and I've had the problem since day one.
I had a day with no trouble recently using Logic 8. With L7 it's always a nightmare. I'm sure that's not the whole answer as I've definitely had the problem in L8 before and after the firmware update.
Interested to know if anyone else with the squeal has had different experiences with different DAW or versions thereof. ..
Also interested to know what shows in others' Cuemix FX meters when the squeal happens. Mine always shown on SPDIF outputs.
channelite - I'm more proof of your theory. G5 Dual 2,5 10.4.11. Interesting to also note that you have no other FW devices. After a bit of checking, there's another post around here that suggests this could be the source. Maybe that'll be my next experiment. Especially if Jugealt's solved his squeal now......
Jugealt - Please let us know if your port switch continues to be a success.
It'd be great if UnicornNations's sleuths got to the bottom of this problem....

Ive been running 5 days without a problem but this morning the sound just cut out no screech though.
Also its my SPDIF that lights up as well when this happens (although it did not do it this morning).
Can someone recommend a PCIE firewire card if its not too expensive i would try that.
Probably the next thing to do is disconnect all other Firewire devices.
Although the 400 and 800 buss should be totally independent im guessing.
The Firewire drives im using are very old i think they are the original Ice Cube ones.
