Mojave MA-2 mic experience

Post by spitfire31 »

Some time ago, I bit the bullet and got myself a Mojave MA-2 tube microphone from Sweetwater — I had a voice/acoustic guitar gig coming up that I thought was worthy of a higher grade LDC than I've had in my collection so far.

Well, that gig was postponed, and in the meantime I decided to use the MA-2 on a voice-over job with a male talent who has a rather distinctive voice. I ran the MA-2 through my MH MIO 2882.

Now I've been sitting here for a couple of days editing, listening to his voice in my KS Digital C5 Tiny monitors, and I'm positively floored.

It's like having this guy (who's also a friend of mine, so I know his voice well) sitting in the flesh one meter in front of me. All the distinctive quirks of his voice are there but not exaggerated, with an airy top end and still warm.

I've still got to try the MA-2 on female voice and an acoustic guitar, but so far I feel I've got a new indispensable tool in my drawer. Considering that it's about 1K USD and sounds like twice that, metaphorically speaking, I'm a happy camper.

I should add that I have no affiliation with Mojave, or Sweetwater.

FWIW,

Joey

If it were easy, anybody could do it.

It's okay, I DO have an affiliation with both! 8) Actually, Mojave is a great partner of our's and we were asked to help them launch the microphone. At that time, the National Sales Manager of Mojave was also our NSM from Royer as they were just launching that division of Royer Labs--he knows me well. To be blunt--I'm one of the top three in the world in terms of the volume I've sold of both Royer and Mojave. I say this to say the following..... I SELL MANY MICROPHONES THAT ARE A HECK OF A LOT MORE MONEY, BUT IT'S REALLY REALLY HARD TO BEAT THAT MA200! I mean, just yesterday I was talking with a client asking about a certain microphone that is popular that is significantly more money--- I kept telling him NO, get the MA200 and a good pre as it will be less money still, but a FAR better solution. I'm glad to read your responses, because that is what I hear ALL the time on the MA200 is just how blown away someone is by using it.

Congrats! 8)

Alright, how about a review of the newly released MA-201...

With all the raves about the MA-200, I'm really psyched to hear what people think of the 201. $695 sounds like a great price point assuming it holds a candle to their other offerings.

Sweetwater is the official launch of the MA201FET just as we were with the MA200. It's the same mic, just a FET version----I'm buying one here pretty soon! Hopefully in a few weeks, I'll have some audio samples of Acoustic Guitar and Male Vocals.

Does that mean that you haven't heard it in person yet?

I've heard the prototype, not the final one.

Got it. I'd love to hear even a brief review as soon as you get a chance to put one through its paces. As a point of reference, I'd love to hear how it compares to some other common microphones such as the 414, U87, KSM44, etc... Also, some impressions as to what you think it would be good (and not so good) at would be most helpful.

Hello Brad,

If everything works out fine I might be able to push the 'power-on' button to start with my studio before the end of next week. As I have just purchased the MA200 I'm really curious about any kind of advice you could give regarding the do's and don'ts for this mic.

Can you already tell something about your experiences with the MA200?

cheers,
pedwin
