console question

Post by poldo »

Hello everybody,

I need to transform the MIDI velocities of a track playing a Wallander Instrument into cc 7 (to control breath cc).
Like this I can edit velocities (faster than editing cc7 on a note to note basis) but it will control actual breath allowing me in between velocity events to draw crescendos etc.

I tried for the first time the console for that, using the following params but I can't get it to work... the track remains silent despite the fact that the knob moves all right according to velocities.
Note that with these settings I can see the console numbox receive the velocities fine and I can also record on the track resulting in cc7 data to draw according to velocities.
but, no sound...

here are my parameters for this :
I also tried with Echo data from source to target.

Could somebody give me a hint on this ?
thank you so much...

best

Have you set CC#7 to breath in WIVI? I have a feeling that WIVI doesn't respond to CC#7 by default. I think by default it's set to CC#2. I always change it to CC#11 (expression) because that's all I've got available on a slider. One problem with doing it by velocities is that you won't be able to shape held notes, which is where WIVI really shines.

Also I'm not sure how you'll get on converting velocities to a CC in the console. I've been playing with the consoles a bit lately and finding some weird behaviour with some things that after intense trouble-shooting seems to be more likely a bug than operator error.

Try downloading the free MIDI utility 'MIDI monitor'. It lets you 'spy' on what MIDI messages are being received and sent from your computer. It's a good way to troubleshoot exactly what the console is actually spitting out.

cc7 is set to breath in WIVI in my setup since I want to use mixer to follow what's going on.
I thought it was possible to reshape on held notes since between two velocities it would read back what's on the track. console states that it takes over whenever it receives data, if not it should keep reading track automation.
I'll have a look at MIDI monitor, and if not doing the right thing, I guess I'll have to do a pluggo to do that.

thanks for your answer.

It's possible I guess. I've never tried it. You'd still be way better off using a data slider on your control keyboard, either CC#7 or 11. I take it your keyboard doesn't have any?

well, I can use a slider, but the thing is that it's much easier for me to enter notes with a particular velocity either with the keyboard or step entry and/or reshape them, select them and change globally etc... to do that on a note basis with cc7 is horrible.

so, transforming vels into cc7 allows you to reinterprets data for audition while keeping editing power of vels. Another thing is that when I export the seq as MIDI file to transcribe in finale, I can have vels to dynamics plugin take care of much of the work for me.

thanks for your reply !

Notes to Velocity

Post by EarlRShay »

Use two consoles: Notes to #7 and #7 to Velocity. Notes to #7 is fast; #7 to Velocity is Slllooooooow so pump the tempo way down and prepare to wait. I use QK for this one and it helps. Consoles are very picky, so be sure you set everything up properly. I do it in Sequence view with the console visible. Good luck It took me a while to set this up but it's worth it. Best, e

Thanks Earl.
I'm sorry I tried everything possible but i still can't make it to work. it remains silent.

But, just to make sure I get it right...

You suggest :
console 1
- notes to #7 (MIDI number ranging from 0 to 127)
console 2
- #7 to vels

Why do you need to get the notes ? I want the velocity to become #7.
Do you have an example with velocities controlling #7 with 2 consoles ?

sorry if I misunderstood you and thank you for your help.

Velocity to #7

Post by EarlRShay »

Sorry I misunderstood you. That should be easier.

I think you know how to handle the console end of things.
A few caveats.
I've had better luck doing it from sequence view with both tracks visible, and the option for your source track set at Velocity and the option for target track set at Volume. Be sure the record settings are set properly on the tracks. Be sure to have the console visible and on top. Be sure that play only when selected is not optioned (unless you have multiple consoles). Hope this helps. Best e
