MOTU 828 Mk3 and Cubase SX 3... no sound throughMain Outs!!!

Post by Audio Oblivion »

Hi all,

Im new to these forums so first off... hello! :D

Just wondering if anyone can help with the following:

I cant seem to get Cubase SX3 to play any sound through main outs 1-2!!!

I am doing the following:
From within Cubase i open up the MOTU Audio Console (device setup-> vst audiobay -> control panel)... and set the main out assign to main out 1-2.

My main stereo bus in Cubase (VST connections->output) is also set to main out 1-2 and the audio track i am playing is assigned to this output.

NO SOUND.

HOWEVER... IF on the MOTU Audio Console, i set the main out assign to analog 1-2 and also set my main stereo bus to analog 1-2 it works perfectly!!! Same for all the other analog outs.

Its just the main out 1-2 that seem to have issues from within SX3.

The main outs work fine in all other apps and even windows default sounds have no problems with main outs.

I am running SX3 on Vista Ultimate 32 bit.

Anyone got any ideas?

I have an idea: There's no way Cubase SX3 is compatible with Windows Vista. Have you tried using a DAW program that is?

While i appreciate the reply... thats just complete rubbish mate...get your facts straight!

I have been using SX3 on Vista with a MOTU 828 Mk2 USB 2.0 for AGES with no problems whatsoever (apart from the crap input/output latency with the Motu USB 2.0 Mk2)

Anyone else got any sensible suggestions?

Check with Steinberg. I am nearly certain that only Cubase 4 is qualified for use with Vista.

Dood... i dont need to check with anyone! I have been happily using SX3 on Vista for a rather long time as per my post above! Its only now i have this issue with a MOTU 828 Mk3... with my previous Mk2 USB the main outs were fine.

Even MOTU support havent been very helpful:cry:

Has anyone else here even seen this problem before? Im interested to know if the same issue occurs with Cubase 4?

i am having the same issue now for weeks and have not resolved. i am on XP though.

I am able to record audio and MIDI but i can not hear anything on playback. Strange thing is at one point it was working, but now it is not.

another thing that is weird is at times when i assign the outs within the motu aduio setup i sometimes see the phones in the options, and sometimes they are gone, not sure if this has anything to do with my overall problem.

but to be clear i just reinstalled xp, cubase sx3 and the motu drivers last night, and i still am at the same problem, this sux.

ive tried giving motu a call, but they only support during hours i am at work so for troubleshooting its not good. i may need to take a whole day off just to call them and try to resolve in from of my computer.

just to add some other weird things ive noticed, even though ive set the outs to main in both cubase and the motu setup, the one thing that im not sure of is under device settings-windows audio-it shows:

in: motu 828: active: yes visiable: yes
out: motu 828: active no: visiable: yes

not sure what this setting is, as i dont think this needs to be set, unless i am wrong. later tonight i will take a screan shot. does anyone know is this setting is sopposed to be active, if so how do i activate it, i try clicking it but it does not do anything.

works perfectly here, make sure that you select the right the right ports for monitoring in CUE FX. and select main mix as default audiodevice

ok not sure what is going on now, in cuemix i have it set up as:

Inputs tab
mic 1 - focus
i can see mic capture audio

mixes tab
bus 1 - focus
bus output - main 1-2

outputs tab
?
not sure what to set here
this is for fx right, b4 going to cubase.

cubase is set up as:
Devices-device setup
MIDI
all MIDI inputs = 828mk3
default MIDI port -
MIDI input = 828mk3
MIDI output = not connected
direct music - "shows no device here"
Windows MIDI
out - 828mk3 - (active)=yes (show)=yes
in - 828mk3 - (active)=yes (show)=yes

VST AUDIOBAY
Master Audio ASIO
total output latency 4.195ms
total input latency 6.168ms
MOTU AUDIO ASIO
VST Inputs = shws all inputs
VST Outputs = shows all outputs *however i dont see phones here???
VST SystemLink
ASIO Input = 1 mic-Guitar 1
ASIO Outputs = 9 Main Outs 1-2

Devices-VST COnnections

Inputs = Stereo Bus =
right = 1 mic-Guitar 1
left = 2 Mic-Guitar2

Outputs = Stereo Bus =
right = 9 Main Outs 1
left = 10 Main Outs 2
*** if i want to add another bus i can but i dont see phones as an option??

The MOTU Audio Console is set up exac like it says in the manual
phones assign = phones 1-2
optical input a = ADAT optical
optical output a = ADAT optical
same for B
main Outs Assign = main outs 1-2
return assign = analog 1-2

Now whats strange tonight is within cubase if i plug my headphones in phones i can hear the metronome click but not the audio that was recorded. Yet with my headphones in the main jack i cant hear neither the click nor audio, but cubase does show the metter going to the recorded audio. and yes the monitor button on the active track is turned off. and if i look in cumix, the meters tab - i see the phones meter going up and down to the click yet the main meters dont show anything except whatever the mic captures live. nothing on recorded playback.

i hope this helps explain what i am curently stuck on. There has to be something dumb i am missing. Can someone shed some light on this Motu newbie.

even more lost now, first off i didnt know that the menu in Cuemix - phones menu and the cubase - device manager - devices - device setup - Motu audio setup were linked.

that i should have known.

my wierd thing is that for some reason i see analog 7 meter move in cuemix, so if i set phones menu to analog 7 i hear the audio recorded. if i set the phones to phones 1-2 i hear the metronome click. if i set it to main 1-2 i dont hear anything. haha. how is it that analog 7 is getting the output? i dont see anything that is routed to analog 7. like i stated in my above post in cubase - devices - vst connections
input = motu stereo
right mic/guitar 1
left mic/guitar 2

output = motu stero
right main out 1
left main out 2

how is this getting routed to analog 7?

is my device f'ed up? its either that or im missing something so stupid.

Ez dubsr6...

sounds like you are basically having the exact same problems as me.

However... i have resolved the issue!

I know its long but i basically started from scratch... wiped my entire hard drive (after backing up essential data of course)... reloaded windows, installed all the windows updates... reloaded sx3 and now it works as it should.

Before my re-install...; in cubase->vst connections-> outputs... i had only one stereo bus setup for the test and i could select which outs this bus was sending to from the drop down list. However the list was ordered something like this:

1 Main out 1-2
2 Main out 1-2
3 Analog 1-2
4 Analog 1-2
5 Analog 3-4
6 Analog 3-4
7 Analog 5-6
8 Analog 5-6
9 Analog 7-8
10 Analog 7-8
11 Phones 1-2
12 Phones 1-2
13 SPDIF

etc ....

But now... after the reinstall the list is as follows:

1 Phones 1-2
2 Phones 1-2
3 Analog 1-2
4 Analog 1-2
5 Analog 3-4
6 Analog 3-4
7 Analog 5-6
8 Analog 5-6
9 Analog 7-8
10 Analog 7-8
11 Main Out 1-2
12 Main Out 1-2
13 SPDIF

etc...

I select 11 Main Out 1-2 for the left channel and 12 Main Out 1-2 for the right channel and i now have sound.

Maybe just re-installing Cubase itself would work but i had to reload my O/S anyway for other reasons.

I hope that helps!
