CPU usage goes up to 50% when turning on my Motu 828

Post by DJM »

Hi everyone,

I wonder is someone can tell me something about this. Every time I turned on my Motu 828, CPU usage goes to 50% (when off CPU usage is normal, 1%). The weird thing is that one of the CPU core is at 95% and the other at 5% average.

Everything runs just fine on my computer (Windows XP SP3, Motu driver 3.6.8.11.32) except for this, which does not allow me to open Reaktor 5 VST on my Nuendo 3 project... I know, heavy combination but if I switch to my old M-Audio my computer performs just fine.

Thank you for posting your ideas

See below image with nothing running on mu PC, just turning MOTU 828 on and off

That it's doing 50% load but only one of your CPUs means that it's a program that doesn't have threading.

Can you look at the "Processes" tab in the Task Manager?
Make sure "Show processes from all users" is checked, and then click twice on "CPU" in the header line to get it to sort by CPU use.
Apart from "System Idle Process", does one process show up with 40-50% CPU? If so, which?

If it appears to be running normally, and it really takes all the CPU juice it can get in a single task, you can lower the priority in the same Process manager. Right-click on the task, choose "Set Priority", and "Below Normal". This should be safe to do for almost any tasks that aren't timing critical (you don't want to do it for system processes or CD burning software, for example), and will ensure that other tasks get priority on the CPUs.

Thanks Arth for posting here. I should have mentioned this because it was part of the analysis I made.
About your comments: The process that (unfortunately) is taking 50% of the CPU when I turn the Motu on is System (user system), process that I can't kill or low priority.

Resolved. I downgrade to driver version 3.4 and now works fine. Important to metoin, on Motu web site driver ver 3.4 is under Windows 2000 but works fine with XP. In fact the readme file inside the zip file say that driver is for 2000 and XP.
