BBE felt nice on bass and kick and sometimes on BGV's if needed. Never used it for an overall mix , just messed up the smoothness I'd get in my mix with it's brittleness.
It is a selective piece at best. Too bad there isnt an upgrade path for us old os 9 buyers.
I guess I'll buy this one as I have missed it for app specific uses.

How does the BBE compare to UAD's Precision Enhancer KHz??
I have demoed the UAD PEK but it just kills the low end completely to much high pass, good on certain things enhancing poorly recorded vocals, guitars etc...
But you have to be technically insane if you even dare to use it on the 2buss.
While reading reviews on the BBE they mentioned that some people use this on entire mixes is that true can it be used that way??

Re: BBE Sonic Maximiser AU finally released!
It's a very cool plug. Extremely simple to use (similar to my hardware Aphex "Easyrider" compressor... I love only having one or two knobs!).jlaudon wrote:The AU version is finally released - I used to have the OS9 VST version, couldn't live w/o it (well, eh, I'm still alive, but you know what I mean...), and the hardware version way back when.
To me, this is one of those amazingly simple but incredibly effective effects.

I tried contacting BBE for any updates, but never got any sort of response (for the VST version that work's fine with Peak Pro 5 under VST/OS X 10.4.11).

Ah! Looks like I’ll have to eat my words!
I emailed NomadFactory yesterday asking about the iLok dongle, and what was the procedure in case of failure.
To paraphrase their answer: you can use hard disk authorization for the time while a broken iLok is being replaced so you’ll be able to keep working. Also, NomadFactory allow the use of the insurance protection offered by Pace (for a small fee). So you do seem to be covered in all aspects. I am very impressed and apologise for assuming earlier that there would be no process in place in case of failure.
As an aside, it goes without saying that Waves do NOT allow use of the Pace insurance protection.

After reading the posts in this thread, I've been rethinking my 'adulation' of this plugin - back in the days when I didn't have a UAD Neve eq (or even a Masterworks eq or Ozone 3), or a Precision Multiband compressor, the BBE was it. Today I realized that for slightly more that the price of the BBE, I can pick up the Synthogy Italian grand. So, for the time being, I'm holding off - you brought me back to earth
That said, I will download the demo just for fun

I work a lot in asian music and found this plug very useful for adding that "bollywood sheen". But I always had to use automation to set the parameters, as the 0.025 or so of process amount I would usually use would not stick otherwise (used with VST Wrapper in DP3, 4 and 5)
Good News ! Here's what I received from contact-us@nomadfactory a few minutes ago:
"Yes, we are working on adding a path to allow owners of v1 to upgrade at
special price,
Please check our website in 20 hours for more info,
Thank you for your interest."

Tell me if I've been mixing too long. (Caffeine - worn - off - apathy - setting - in. )
Back in the day of HiFi car stereos that used "cassettes". I seem to remember a little logo next to the dolby button that said "BBE sonic maximiser". or maybe on a seperate "Graphic Equalizer" that sat below it. or maybe it was on a walkman type device?
Someone may have already said something like this? Indulge me... I'm back in my 'yooof'.
I thought it sounded a bit... *HYPED*, but it got the girlies going!
while sharing a walkman earphone! Or was that using the "Metal" setting?
Pretty sure it was the AIWA walkmans and car stereos??
Anyone know the history of this thingy? Dolby made it into the mainstream.

I personally find the BBE very useful.
It is a different type of device than the Aphex Aural Exciter but they both have their uses.
The BBE process corrects the phase problems that occur when amplifying a sound, sounds change when they are passed through electronic circuitry.
The Aphex generates odd numbered harmonics by a form of distortion to the original signal.
I can't live without the BBE but as with anything, use sparingly, its like having too much reverb, chorus, etc.

I finally got around to trying this plug. I never used on on my guitar rig although I guess that is/was all the rage for a while. I did a little experimenting and approached it as a "clarity" plug in how I thought of it. I remember hearing people throw an exciter on a lead vocal etc. So I just tried it on my lead vocal track of a song I'm working on as well as lead guitars. It seems like if you have a rather dense mix going on, you can dial up just enough of this effect to make the lead vocal a bit more intelligible and clear in the mix... enough so that you can back the track volume down a tad.
Same thing with lead guitar solo tracks. It gives it a tiny bit more clarity and helps separate it from the rest of the mix. Of course... I'm no trained engineer... so I don't know if this is the wrong way to think of this plug. I didn't even want to try the demo at first as I know many people who dismiss these sorts of units right off the bat... hence my measured approach from the outset of just using it on key tracks that I want to "pop" just a bit more.
It's kind of like the audio equivalent it seems of the "Sharpen" filter in PhotoShop... only with more control over the sharpness.
