I've got a rhodes mark 1, a nord stage and an electro(haven't got the heart to sell it) and scarbees libraries.
They're all very good
Nothing is like the real Mark 1, absolutely avesome sound which cuts through every mix. It's terrible to my hands.
second best is the stage which outperforms the electro on the rhodes samples by far, but I actually prefer the electros wurlis.......strange.
The scarbee libraries are big, huge and sound avesome but I think the stage has better rhodes sounds. The clavinet samples beats everything out there.
For live gigging alter between elctro and the stage depending on venue......I never would carry around my rhodes again mostly depending on the maintenance.

aight, so I pulled the trigger on a Nord Electro 73. Tried it out at the music store, and fell in love with the thing. So simplistic, yet so expressive. I sat down with a Yamaha workstation and couldn't figure out how to switch the patch off some preprogrammed beat sample...so i gave up! I already have an alesis synth, that is impossible to program, so I wanted something easy, with good EP and Hammond sounds for live use.
I've never owned a keyboard of it's quality. I don't like VI's because they are too much trouble (or I am lazy). I do most of my composing/songwriting/arranging with the Mac off.
Several Rhodes Stage pianos have come on the market, but i've let them go. (except a stage 54...i tried to get that one...the guy wanted only 300$!!!) I need something for live use more so than the studio, so the 20-25 lb Electro just makes sense.
Now to start saving pennies for my "studio" Rhodes...it will happen. Well, first I'm gonna have some fun with my new, red, Swedish keyboard!

I have a Mark V also - run it through a twin re-issue - sounds beautiful
I read somewhere they used twins at the factory to test, so i figured it was the way to go
They apparently didn't make many of them as they were going under, but it's been said that next to a good MkII, they're the sh*t
Alas, I gig with Lounge Lizard and a controller - cause the Rhodes is 100+lbs and pretty bulky, and then there's the twin
Plus I'd be bummed if anything happened to it
my equation: gigs+vintage keys-roadies= sorry, but no...

Brings back memories of solo sliding my 73 Stage into the back seat of my '63 Nova... the seats were never the same.ltemma74 wrote:I did some rearranging last night and lugged my MKI 88 key Rhodes from one side of the studio to the other -- a whopping 15 feet -- all by myself. Thankfully I am not injured!
I wonder if it's out of tune now...

Interesting thread. I owned three Rhodes in my lifetime - a beautiful 1972 Suitcase 73, a 1975 Stage 73 that had a bad phono connector, and a 1976
Stage 73 that had a very barky sound. The Suitcase was the best of them all, I wish I'd never sold it (starving musician days back then).
Thinking about it again, yeah I might be able to find a used Rhodes in good condition - but then, my mind goes to how heavy the things are, and do I want to lug one to a gig - nooooo. I used to have a Hammond B3, loved the sound, do I miss moving it (and the Leslie) - nooooo.
The Nord Electro is indeed nice. The Rhodes sounds in the Yamaha Motif XS are also very nice. The Motif XS gives you a wider palette of sounds than the
Electro.
