Video Card going in my G5?

Post by gearboy »

Hello all. I have a Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz tower that's still trucking. I added a FW800 card to this guy about a month ago and three weeks ago I noticed that one of my flatscreens (I have two) started to go blurry to the point of not being able to use it at all. I thought that the monitor was going. However, when I switch it out with the other one I duplicate the problem no matter which monitor I use. I'm now assuming that it's the video card, which is original from 2004. It *could* be the adapter from the video card, though I highly doubt it. Unplugging the monitor from the adapter/card, shutting it down, and plugging it back in usually fixes the monitor for a bit, but the problem is now occurring more often and is becoming a pain in the butt.

Anyone deal with this on one of the older G5 towers? Mine is PCI and I think that this card will work if I do need to replace it: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Te ... 00436011B/

Any help is appreciated.

Try a different refresh rate. I thought my card was going but the refresh rate was wrong. It wanted to be 75 but I had it at 60. Took about 4 days to figure out since one monitor actually DID die.

I reset my refresh rates both to 60. They were at 75. We'll see if the problem persists. If I disconnect the monitor from the adapter and plug it back in it clears things up. However it's happening more frequently.

All of this started when I installed my new FW card, btw. I wonder if I placed it in the wrong slot and it's soaking up too much power or something.

Clueless.

Sounding more like a power supply issue. It heats up and starts south...

Any ideas?
