MOTU 828 MK2 no sound with XP x64

Post by Rinmeister »

The same problem is also discussed in Topic Ultralite no Audio - Windows XP pro x64 edition.

I found the same goes for the 828 MK2. I have no problems under x86 Windows XP. Under x64 I get no sound. I found a topic on the cakewalk forums describing the same issue and stating that there is a problem (known to MOTU) with the firewire drivers if more than 2gigs of RAM are in the system.

In my case this is true. I don't have the time to do another installation of x64 (the main reason that I want to make this move is to be able to use more than 2 gigs of RAM anyway). I wonder if there are any members here who can verify this. Are there any members who have a working configuration with XP x64 and more than 2gigs of RAM?

Furthermore if it is true that this is a known issue to MOTU, frankly I think it would suit them to post this on their website.

Any help is appreciated. Rene

PCI relocation problem

Post by Rinmeister »

Apperently this is the reason why it is not working on my system. I indeed have 4 Gigs of RAM and PCI relocation enabled.

quote from the cakewalk forum:

"
MOTU firewire drivers won't work with 4GB of RAM on a 64 bit OS unless you disable PCI device relocation, which leaves you with something like 2.25-2.75GB usable (depending on how much video card memory you have, primarily). This option goes by names like "relocate PCI hole" or "4GB memory hole" in motherboard BIOS.

Other than that hardware/driver issue, 4GB has been great for me (even if I only have 2.5GB usable)."
This should probably also answer the question for MOTU ultralite. If I find time I am going to do the reinstallation again and wil post my results here.

Again it is also stated that MOTU knows of this issue and that they're working with Microsoft on a solution. Should this be true then it would be nice if we can get some sort of a time estimate.

All the best

Why even put out 64-bit drivers if they aren't tested.

I have an 896HD and I can't get sound at all.

I can record in, but no output through the phones. This must be it.

Ugg. MOTU is awful.

XP64

Just curious: under system properties in XP does it show 4 gigs of RAM available?

I have 8gb of RAM. I figure that is the problem. My HD 896HD works perfectly on my 32-bit system, same setup.

Yes it will. Problem is with x32 you're losing HALF your ram and no application can use more than 2GB RAM. This is unacceptable! I have Vista x64 and Win XP Pro x64 with 8GB of RAM and my 896HD is unusable with this hardware. If I remove three pieces of ram so I boot with 2GB, I can hear audio from my 896.

C'mon MOTU get the driver out Now!

New drivers

Post by Rinmeister »

Has anyone tried the new 64 bit drivers (3.6.8)? Are the memory issues solved?

I have tried the new drivers; they still are buggy with >4GB of RAM. Please, please please contact MOTU technical support yourself for each issue you run into, so that they can become aware of 64-bit issues.

On the other hand, the new drivers in 32-bit XP are over twice as fast!

I'm currently in the same boat, not being able to use the 828mk2 under vista64.

I've created a techlink yesterday. As of now, it seems it is at least possible to get the thing running when doing two things:
1. The machine cannot have more than 4GBytes of RAM installed at all.
2. The BIOS setting to map device adresses outside the 4GB must be DISABLED. And this is where you turn your nice 64bit machine into an old fashioned 32bit box, since disabling that function makes the 3.2GB available memory phenomenon come back.

So the bottom line right now is: the V64 drivers are outright incompatible. The tech support said that there are generally no problems with the 828mk2 and Vista64, but for me seeing is believing, and i dont see a working device yet. How they ever managed to get a WHQL certificate is beyond me. Ironically, i chose to buy an 828 based on the fact that there ARE V64 drivers available. Well, i guess thats one way to fsck myself.
