My 828mk3 does exactly the same thing. I thought it was a clocking issue but turns out its not. i use the mk2 as an aggregate device and have an ada8000 hooked up to each one. I never had this problem with the mk2.
Again it seems very random as i ran a 5 hour session yesterday and not a problem. Turned it back on this morning same screech.

Man, thanks guys. I guess that about sums it up for me. Goodbye MOTU. sounds like the company is finally falling apart. Too bad, I've been eying the 828mk3 for weeks. & now i hear people are having the same problems with the 828mkII and the Ultralite. Sounds like a hardware problem. Guess I'll be looking at another company for an audio interface. Too bad, nice converters. Maybe I'll have to chuck out the extra money for a TC Electronics Konnekt 48.
Any objections? anyone?

In my opinion it doesnt sound like that, there is obviously an issue that needs to be resolved. Prior to the mk3 i had an 828mk2 that worked fine i then bought a saffire pro 16 but it had a similar issue i took it back and got the mk3 instead so maybe its something in the mac it would be interesting to see if pc users have the same issue or if its only g5 macs. or is this issue there on intels as well? i am running Tiger if that helps anyone maybe the problem is not there in Leopard.[/quote]

nativeops,
I chucked out the extra money for the Ensemble... glad I did... amazing interface, great quality... stable... etc.
I'd be careful of the Konnekt 48... I looked into this before I finally grabbed the Ensemble... and although the interface looks exceptional with the volume control and all... according to users TC has STILL yet to release stable drivers... people are still having all kinds of problems.
I have to admit though, when the Ensemble was first released it too had all kinds of driver and stability issues... as does the mk3 and the Konnekt 48. The reason I still went with the Ensemble is because a) the problems have been fixed... and b) it's on a whole different level then MOTU. MOTU makes great products, but I wanted something with higher end converters and more of a Pro interface. MOTU is definitely Pro, just the lower end stepping stone... I still have my 828mk2 and love it... and will probably keep it around. But for my main interface... the Ensemble is rock solid... Yes it was quite a bit extra money... but worth every penny.

Same problem here with an Ultralite mkIII and 2 brand new iMacs. Unfortunately, afaik, there's no possibility to disable the S/PDIF in the MOTU Audio Setup. Hope MOTU will fix that problem soon, it's a real problem.
MacBookPro, 10.64, MOTU Ultralite, DP7.2, Live Suite 8, Logic Studio 9, MaxMSP 5
