Firmware update for 828mk3 just posted

There's a firmware updater available at http://www.motu.com/download/download_m ... duct_id=14
(Mac version). Unfortunately, no release notes (why oh why would anybody EVER release an update without a single word about what it does?) but it seems to fix the hot output problem. I haven't measured, but it seems about right now.

If anybody from MOTU is reading this, could you please tell us what's in the update? And, while you're at it, would you please post the manuals?

Just installed it - definitely fixes the output issue. Sadly the "squeal" still seems to be happening - although I just did a reset so we'll see it it's a "leftover". I HAVE noticed that the squeal only occurs when the CueMix FX software is open, so it may be a software issue.

I've never heard the squeal. Do you have anything else on your firewire bus? What kind of mac?

Maybe it's just my system... but do some more tests. I list everything I tried here: http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27101 and I determined that no matter what was open... it was just a random glitch can be fixed by power cycling the unit... I use "fixed" lightly as sometimes I'd boot it up and it would be fine for hours and hours, as long as I didn't power cycle the unit... other times it would happen over and over. The way to test is to plug in an external FW hard drive to the same bus... sometimes transferring a file to the internal drives from the FW will work flawlessly during Audio playback, other times it will cause the screech.

Keep in mind that I was too having the screech with NOTHING plugged into the FW bus except the mk3.

MOTU gave me some beta drivers to try which actually lessened the amount of screeching but didn't fix it for good.

Definitely seems to be a driver issue though... check my post for more info.

man what crappy directions. i didnt realize motu was an asian company. they should hire some translators. i figured out on my own that "hold down" the page button means push in but im stumped on "power cycle the device".
the 1st instruction was not to turn off, disconnect etc while using the updater otherwise id assume "power cycle the device" meant turn off and then back on. if i did what it says, id strap it on the back of my ducati and take it out for some wheelies.

seriously though does power cycle truly mean turn off and back on?

nevermind i crossed my fingers turn off and back on and it says 1.05 now. i believe im good2go. i apologize for my on-going confusion. heh

Yes, "power cycle" means "turn it off and back on". It's very usual language in the electronics / computer world, maybe not so much in the music world.

I must admit, the very sketchy, though adequate, instructions don't bug me nearly as much as the lack of release notes. I ran a software company for over 20 years, and if my engineering group had ever done that heads would have rolled.

BTW, MOTU is a Boston area company.

I agree it seems to be a driver issue. I have nothing else plugged in as well. It does only seem to happen when I have the CueMix FX open, but since I haven't had time to do a full day of testing, I can't rule out co-incidence. Power cycling always fixing the issue, as does changing the samplerate from the Control Pane.

please pardon if you have already considered but i read a post about airport being on and disrupting performance. just a thought.

heres something i noticed in garageband if i change my reverb for instance to 6 it will slide down to 5 on its own. and if i click on it to look at the number it will slide down 1 too. perhaps the clock is drifting too?

hi everybody,

I've just updated my firmware successfully, but it doesn't fix the output issue on my 828MKIII.

Main out sounds too loud, and I had to change trim on my dynaudio monitors.
When I'm about at -15-10 db, monitors going clip.

With my previous 828MKII (sold last week), I never had this problem.

what I should do? I've tried with a reset, but nope.
