Thanks for all your responses guys..
eSoundz have a group buy at the moment whereby I can pickup SampleTank and 1 other free IK Multimedia plugin for $239 US in total. I'd choose CSR of cource...
This is a bit of a bargain to say the least... (CSR normal rrp = $399!)
Is there any other convo reverb anyone can think of anywhere near that price that competes?

But what's the point of an algo simulation when altiverb comes with IR from all presets from the L480 and some EMT stuff? The L480 have some pretty nice plates...David Polich wrote:I'm now hearing that it is usually an algorithmic reverb on the vocals, or at least it sounds like it (and my guess would be a Lexicon or Eventide in most cases).

I downloaded the CSR 10-day demo and was blown away. What a fantastic-sounding reverb! I immediately signed up for the group buy. It really is quite a good deal.Oronsai wrote:Thanks for all your responses guys..

IMO, IR verbs are not "all that." They are good at what they do, but for true algo or non-lin verb, they do not beat the actual units they grab from. No way they can, if you think about it. An IR is simply, and only, a snapshot. An actual space or an actual algo/non-llin is like a movie, comparatively; time variant. IR verbs with all the fixins they have today can do really well, but it is still a snapshot. Want more tail? Want to change the room size slightly? It is now processed, and is not "true." Please do not immediately get all offended and equate that to saying IR = bad. I never said that, and it is not true. Heck, when Sony put their first unit out all those many years ago, I thought it was brilliant. I could not believe it took so long for the concept to make it to computer based DAWs.
Eventually someone will take IR to the next level and create something that is time variant, and true to the source over that time. For now, if I have a real plate, space or L480, I would use it without even considering an IR of that plate, space, or L480.

Interesting. I never really considered that algorithmic reverbs were more than a kind of snapshot themselves. Both can be have their parameters modified so that the decay is affected... so why, in the end, is one more like a movie more than the other?nikki-k wrote:An IR is simply, and only, a snapshot. Each definitely has a different kind of sound, and each have their place. I think I'm gonna have to join that group buy, because I did try the CSR demo and it really sounded good. Will I really want to use ProVerb on everything? I doubt it.

Yeah, a digital verb could be more like a snapshot than a movie when comparing to a natural space or plate. But, with an IR, it s one set of settings per IR, a "stagnant" piece of time (for the most part). With the additional parameters and processing available in IR verbs today, they have almost become a hybrid of sorts. I wish the Wizoo verb had been developed further... But do not think it is even a comparison to hold an L480 in one hand, and a collection of L480 IR's in another, regardless of the engine for the IR's. Similarly, a natural space compared to the IR's...or even comparing a natural space to non-lin/digital. But, all have their place IMO, and all are equally valuable in considering when building a toolbox.zed wrote:Interesting. After all.. what would "In The Air Tonight" have been if they had simply said, "Hmmm...let's use a real kit for the whole song, and use the natural ambiance of this excellent drum room...only."?
I guess my point, put in a round about, unclear way was that to build a toolbox and only stick an IR in there would be selling your, and others, art short.
