i think the uad stuff will be my next purchase, but i am on a pci-x g5 and will be buying a pci-e mac in the next year. does anyone know if i will be able to simply transfer my old plugs, presets and instances to a new computer?

You can transfer the plug license over easily. However, as I'm sure you suspect, you'll need to purchase a new card (PCIe). You can pick up the least expensive one -- a card is a card -- but it's still a cost incurred.
