Mike, It looks like that I have to order a newer version of Disk Warrior because every time I try with this one it wants to boot into Classic mode which is sytem OS 9.
Oh well! more money, but if I can get back the files it will be worth it!
I'll get the upgrade and report back if I'm succesful (or not!)
Shoosie, I decided to go ahead and get a Glyph because I don't want to risk this again. That said, the Lacies have been very good and this is the first spot of bother I've had with them.
Thanks

Disk Warrior OS X works fine.
Glyphs are good and the company's very good. That said, when it's a drive's time to go, it will go. I've had Glyphs die on me, fwiw. That's the luck of the draw.
In other words, back up everything immediately. At least once.

Re: Is the LaCie d2 Hard Drive OK?
Forsooth,
I had a 200GB FW400 Lacie d2 die on me late last year. It started screeching intermittently and I knew it was in trouble, so I stopped using it. I bought a second one and barely coaxed the data from the old one to the new before the old one died. I had to copy it one folder at a time, then let it "rest." Sustained reads and writes were failing on it. LaCie's warranty service was really good though. The old one is now home safe and running like a champ next to it's twin.
Best,
Paul

forsooth: depending on where you get the upgrade, make sure you have the latest version for OSX (if you buy it somewhere other than Alsoft, you might not get the latest version). There is an update on the Alsoft site to make a bootable updated CD for fixing your disk in OSX mode (in case you need to boot from the CD).
See here (there is bar off to the right of the page listing updates).

And...good luck! Let us know how it turns out.

Re: Is the LaCie d2 Hard Drive OK?
I have 11 La Cie drives - various sizes. All still working fine. None bigger than the 250g and those I use almost exclusively for back up and archiving. The 160gs are cheap, reliable, hot-swappable, and easy to transport in a decent case of some sort. [l Iike to occasionally take something home to play with on an M-Box I keep there]
I as a habit do not keep all of them running all the time however - only 4 or 5 that have the current work and a few for Daily backups.
