Newbie here (although over 50y)!
I've been following all the iMac/MBP "Firewire problems" threads today, and see very few posts after February, but several unnerving stories.
Q: I have a brand new iMac (says it has Lucent chip) and a MOTU 828 (original). Should I forget this combination, or has the problem finally been solved?

FWIW, I got a previous-gen MacBook Pro (15" Santa Rosa 2.2Ghz), manufactured in January of this year (so it's probably one of the LAST ones made of this model). It has the TI FW chip!
You can find out the manufacture date of your Mac by entering the serial number at http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html . It won't tell you what kind of FW chip you have, I used Boot Camp/Windows for that!

There are definitely issues with the Macbooks. I have the intel one running 10.4.11, the moment I installed RME FF800 and opened DP, it crashed. It does that everytime without fail. I fortunately also own the older Powerbook G4 which handles perfectly with RME. The G5 at the studio has no problems either. Unfrortunately my new Intel based Macbook is up for grabs!

please anyone have some news?
i have troubles with my pc and thinkin to switch to apple.
while i cant afford a mbp, ive found a very good deal on mb.
BUT
cmd-s reveals that it has the dreaded LUCENT chipset inside.
ive heard rumours on the net that newer mb's with lucent are ok, or that leopard and some updates fixed it.
motu has no news about it, but i just updated my techlink with a question.
anyone can confirm \ denie improvements? im almost goin crazy, no pc route\no mac route....
do i have to sell my ultralite?

MacBook and UltraLite - power supply causes my problems
So far my late 2007 MacBook and my week old UltraLite play together flawlessly - audio and MIDI - AS LONG AS I run the MacBook off the battery. Yup, plug in the AC adaptor to the MacBook and all sorts of white noise, interference, you name it - happens. Maybe the FW port is too close to the power port, maybe shielding - but that's my only issue. Everything else plays well together and all my DP5 songs stream off the internal (partitioned) hard drive with no glitches (yet).

please can you tell me which firewire chipset your MB has?
hold cmd and S while booting to see the chipset manufacturer.
thanks for the info. it is a bit of a problem runnin the mac only off batteries...but...
(btw strange thing: on my pc laptop it happens exactly the opposite, i can use the ultralite only via ac adaptor, when i use it thru batteries its all sort of glitches...)
