828 MkIII and Mackie Control

Post by DaveBoulden »

How is the Mackie control actually implemented? Does the Mackie Control actually link to the CueMix software running on a PC/Mac or does it link to the actual 828 MkIII... in other words, can the onboard mixer of the 828 be controlled via Mackie Control without the presence of a computer to run CueMix?

I am thinking about upgrading to this from my emu 1820m. I had the same question kinda. Can a control surface control the sliders on the cuemix pannel?

Mackie Control, HUI, and other control surface protocols require a host computer, so the 828mk3 needs to be connected to a computer for the control surface to be able to control CueMix FX.

can you use any other control surface to control the cuemix? (ie: the volume sliders?)

I asked a similar question to MOTU sales support and here is the answer I got:
The
> volume and pan of CueMix can also be controlled by any hardware device
> that supports the Mackie Control protocol.
So this seems to confirm that it is the CueMix software that is remotely controlled and not the mk3, so a computer is required.

What's interesting also is that the response only talks about volume and pan, where my question was related to all the fonctionality of the onboard DSP, including effects. I understood from the answer that the effects (compressor, EQ, reverb, ...) cannot be remotely controlled.

I've tried to control CueMix FX with my AlphaTrack, which i set to emulate Mackie Control, but it doesn't work. I can't get CueMix to recognize that the AlphaTrack is there.

I sent a tech support request to Frontier but haven't heard from them yet. Maybe I'll try motu.

I believe that RME's Fireface 400 can be controlled via Mackie Control with no host computer attached. Just the control surface and the Fireface 400.

CueMix FX does NOT work with the AlphaTrack. See http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=215297 for more detail.

CueMix FX under Mac OS X supports the Mackie Control Universal, Mackie HUI, Mackie BabyHUI, and any control surface device that features a Mackie Control or HUI emulation mode. The Frontier Design AlphaTrack does not work with CueMix FX because of the way its Audio MIDI Setup profile has been configured to work by the manufacturer. The majority of control surface devices that support Mackie Control or HUI emulation do not have this problem.

It is not possible to control CueMix FX with generic MIDI continuous controller messages. You must use a control surface device that uses the Mackie Control or HUI protocols.

Interesting. I wonder why this is the case? By the way, with Baby HUI, I cannot get cue mix to bank switch. With Mackie Control, no problem.
