External Drive

Post by kristupes »

I need to buy a new external hard drive to run my samples off and wanted to get some suggestions as to what are the best hard drives out there. I have a MacBook pro and use DP 5. I bought a Maxtor Firewire 400/800, but that was a disaster, so I need something far more stable.
Thanks.

I buy either seagate or IBM/Toshiba drives and put them in a firewire case, like this:

I use Glyph and they are great... and will recover your data almost no matter what if the drive tanks

I agree with emulatorloo. Build your own! I've had good luck with the Samsung Spinpoints. Very bad luck with Maxtor.

Thanks.
This comes as no surprise to me. As I have posted before, I have yet to experience a Maxtor drive that didn't fail. I am astonished that Maxtor can stay in business with such an awful track record.

I have had great luck with Western Digital drives and the Mercury Elite-AL Pro external firewire cases from OWC. In fact I have had great luck with everything I have purchased from OWC.

IMPORTANT POINT!!!... I always purchase an empty drive enclosure and the drive as a separate item... Often the sellers who bundle pre-loaded external drives will put the drives they want to get rid of in them. After all you do NOT want another "Maxtor Inside"!
