Recording stopped after 1hour?

Post by valleysound »

I was recording 7 tracks at 44khz though my Metric Halo 2882 into DP and after 1 hour 6 minutes, the recording stopped. It happened on two sets of music at about the same time length. I usually record through the Metric Halo software and them import to DP, but I wanted to try it differently and skip the import step.
Any reason why the recording would stop on 2 separate occasions at about the same time length.
Luckily it was not a critical recording!

Could it be related to the file size limitations of the SDII audio file format - it's getting a bit old now.

And if it indeed is, it's soon to be history!

Selectable file format in DP6...

There is! Theoretically it's 4 GB but most get 2 GB @ most... C'mon DP6!!!
At 44.1 16 bit there is 10 MB per minute (approx) so do the math and you'll see why...
Hey Paul, could you find a second while your recording (say, in between songs for instance) just to stop DP then play some bars of the sequence then hit record again to create new soundbites in the session? I still think a lot of location recordings should have a backup just for these types of situations but that's my opinion...
Good luck!

Interesting. I've recorded files that were over 2 hours long. I've got to look up those files and see just how long they were.

--- gone to look them up... back ---

Interesting. This was a spoken interview. At 1 hour 2 minutes and 55 seconds, DP ended the file and started a new one. There is a slight gap, where the audio is missing due to the creation and insertion of a new file. DP apparently has limits to how long it will record (and thus, the lengths of SDII files), and that limit must be in the neighborhood of just over an hour. If I'd been recording 4, 6, 8, or 10 tracks, we might have hit that limit much earlier.

Bob Katz, in his book Mastering Audio, speaks of the file lengths of AIFF and WAV files. If you're recording in 5.1 surround at 192KHz, you could hit the wall in 20 minutes. It's the physical limitation of the file addressing system. Perhaps in the 64 bit days we'll extend that an order of magnitude or so.

I can definitely create new soundbites at appropriate times. I usually record things a bit differently using my Metric Halo internal recording software then import or use an HD24 and import when I want more channels. For critical recording I do have two systems running.

While I was testing and burning in a new Mac Pro I was recording 24 tracks of 24bit/44.1 audio for over two hours at least five times with no problems.

....You could always borrow someone's ADAT HD24 to get longer recording times.....
