'Basic' Mixing Techniques by Paul White is a very good place to start! Don't be put off by the name 'basic'.... There's a whole series of these books... 'Basic' Microphones, 'Basic' Mixers, etc..
Paul White has been one of the main writers in 'Sound on Sound' magazine for years and seems to know quite alot about, erm, quite alot!

Good call timriley.
Paul's writing style has always been extremely readable to me; I always enjoyed seeing how many words into an article I could pick that it was his.

Do you mean the little ones? I have a few of thosetimriley wrote:'Basic' Mixing Techniques by Paul White is a very good place to start! Don't be put off by the name 'basic'.... There's a whole series of these books... 'Basic' Microphones, 'Basic' Mixers, etc..

They're good. The only thing is that, if I remember correctly, they are a bit dated in terms of mentioning mostly analog stuff. If I recall correctly, he mentions digital concepts almost as an after-thought, but I could be wrong.
I have a few of these little ones (Basic recording, basic mixers, basic microphones, etc).
I should re-read them, because when I first did I knew NOTHING about audio, so I didn't grasp as much as I could probably now.
Hey, Schweats, that looks very nice. PLEASE tell us what you think about this package when you get it. I'm REALLY curious about this, and if it turns out the course and material are as good as they look, I'll get those as well.Schweats wrote:I just ordered these but haven't received 'em yet••¦

Yes those little ones!

You're right, they are slightly dated... I've read the basic microphones and basic mixers too! You're thread reminded me of the Basic Mixing Techniques I had sitting on the bookshelf gathering dust...
These books aren't exactly groundbreaking! They're just quite enjoyable to read and very accessable.. If you read them you'll probably be thinking to yourself, "well i already knew that", a fair bit... I know i was!!.. But then again, I find that quite reassuring.. (edit: having said that, there were probably as many nuggets of info that i didn't know, as of those that i did!)
Basic Mixing Techniques is a good place to start, before going in deeper.. As for being dated, sometimes it's good to take a step back so you can take three steps forward....
It must be very hard to write books about modern technology with the pace that things move at! This book was published in 2000........ Just after the invention of the wheel i believe!!

For anyone who likes a visual approach, the book by David Gibson called 'The Art of Mixing: A Visual Guide to Recording, Engineering, and Production' is really excellent.

I just received my copy of Mixing with your Mind, and I am thrilled. I actually expected that it was a bigger sized, soft cover book (like maybe 9"x12"), but it is actually a smaller, hard cover book (about the size of a novel), complete with an attached red ribbon bookmark. Very nice.
The book took less than 2 weeks to reach me, in Canada, from the time I placed the order (http://www.mixingwithyourmind.com). Stav kindly wrote me a quick note in response to an order comment that I made, and told me that the book would ship the next business day, and indeed it arrived 10 days after that shipment date, all the way from Australia.
The book seems well written and filled with stuff. It is going to take me some time to go through it and start experimenting with all the techniques, but I am quite excited about beginning. Just need DP6, and I'll really be able to start getting things done around here!

Internal Mixing by Friedemann Tischmeyer DVD 1 & 2. Get them!
Lots of basic to advanced tips. I wrote a review for these because they paid for themselves in the first 20 minutes. And they go on for hours.

Hmmm sounds very tempting. After reading about it, as well as your review on UA, they seem very thorough. But it is a little pricey. If it truly is worth it, I'll splurge. Can you give us a little more info about the dvds, from your "insiders perspective"?bOing wrote: Internal Mixing by Friedemann Tischmeyer DVD 1 & 2. Get them!

[Oh, wait. I don't want to be too thorough.]
Well, there is plenty of unraveling of audio mysteries - production tips and tricks to get certain sounds; recording good instrument tracks; working with effects; etc.
One of the many useful hints included adding more distinct chorus to your bass sound:
1. copy your bass track;
2. add the effect only to this copy
3. then use a hi-pass filter on the copy
4. mix the two tracks together.
Result: only the highs of the bass sound have the effect definition. The bass doesn't go all gooey and indistinct. Good to know. And one of many, many tips.
[Geez, I should get a commission for this...]
