Back in the early 90's, I bought a really cheap video input card from OWC, it may have been a blow-out sale; So long ago, it was Nubus. I plugged it in wrong, blew it up. I told them the truth, and they still said "Send it back, we'll send you another one." And they did. So they're on my list of merchants to trust and buy from too.

I wanna echo those sentiments about getting OWC on the phone. I was going to buy ram from them too and tried for three days to get someone. I've always bought my ram from Data Memory Systems but I've heard such raves about OWC that I thought I'd give them a try. Well I tried, then I called Data Memory Systems and had the order placed in about 2 minutes. I still don't have an opinion about OWC other than they're hard to get ahold of. A couple of years back I had a ram module go out and I called Data Memory Systems to get a new one. The person I talked to asked if it was one of their modules. I asked how I could tell and he asked me to tell him the serial number. He said it was one of theirs and he'd send out a new one right away. I asked him if he needed me to send the old one back first and he said no....just send it when it was convenient. That's how they've always been with me.

Afert two weeks and calling them still no ram in the post. The day I called they told me they had 4gb sticks in stock and would get it out the next day. Still no sticks.

I'm really in trouble because of their quoted time delivery. Maybe they were fine in the past but I'm having issues TODAY!

Just got off the phone again with Dave Jones at OWC who was actually a very nice guy. He dug into my deal and here is what he found.

My OWC order was placed on the 25th of last month. The website said 4 days and the total cost was $765 shipped. I called a week later and queried where was it... The website then said 2 days backordered. The guy told me it would go for sure in two days.

Now I find the back order info on the web is bogus and does not reflect REAL delivery time and I may have to wait as long as two more weeks or more.

He will check tomorrow and I will likely cancel the order if that's the case and just pay up from apple with a delay of almost three weeks total.

If I placed another order it would now be $806 for the same ram btw.

THIS REALLY SUCKS BAD NOW!!!! Never again.

I too have nothing but good things to say about MacSales, but then I've always gotten everything on time quickly and in working order.

I think some kinds of RAM are in short supply now. I just ordered from TransIntl.com, and they gave me the runaround for a couple days, after telling me they were getting some in that afternoon, but I think they didn't want to lose a sale, so they tap danced.

MemoryAmerica is the cheapest, and lifetime warranty.

It looks like OWC did the same thing on this deal where they were really taking pre-orders, not real in house ready to ship order and not qualifying it.

Anyway, I'm told the fastest chips are the 4gb sticks and really speed things up but you can't mix them with other manufacturers or  . W/the Apple ram apparently you can. If I kept the two 1gb sticks I have and added 2- 2gbs of actual Apple ram, which I just bought on ebay, I would still have to loose them all when the OWC order came in or have issues according to MacMall. Is this your understanding too?

I could sell them I guess. Not sure if I should just wait out the $750 order and try adding them in with the Mac ram and see what happens.

in-decision......

wait

Post by willheim »

timeline,

i have found that it is usually better to wait with the devil you know.

you'v e spent the time getting on their radar and have nothing to gain from dropping out.

you've been moved to the front of the line, why go to the baak of the line somewhere else..

but who knows.

Your right I'll hang but I'm afraid I won't see any 4gb ram sticks for months the way they're talkin.

I CAN AT LEAST OPERATE W/my original 2GB of ram and two new 2GB sticks = 6gb and keep it going for a bit. Then when it shows, it shows and I'll off the 6GB of Apple ram for 8 of OWC.

Worst delivery times of any company I have ever ordered from.
I'm in Canada and just received my new video card from OWC late February. Ordered it on a Sunday (for religious reasons?) and it arrived here in about 7 days. That was via US post, I believe.

No pricey wings on that package. But it wasn't slow. Slow? I once had a synth module sent from England via regular post and it took more than 90 days to arrive. I was about to begin the claims process...

Just following up on my order. It arrived on time today, my son installed it into his computer, and he's one happy guy, I tell you. Maya never ran so well before. Gotta thank Jeff again for pointing me to that. I'm going to order some for MY computer next. Consider that I spent $600 for 2 GB RAM (4 x 512MB DIMMS) at Apple for the exact same thing (with only 1 year warranty) that I got from OWC for $95. OWC's RAM has a lifetime replacement warranty.

I've heard good and bad about OWC in this forum, but my experience has been good.
In early February I ordered 8- 2GB of RAM and 2- 500GB WD hard drives. I called to make sure it all was in stock. It arrived two days later (even though Chicago was buried in snow). Can't beat that IMHO. While I had them on the phone I asked what they would give for trade in on my 2- 1GB RAM modules (that came with the Mac Pro). They offered $50.00 (needless to say I sold them on ebay).

Glad that the RAM thing is working out!

My FW800 PCI card arrived yesterday and I installed it tonight in 45 seconds and it works like a charm. Now I can stream my sample library via FW800 on a separate bus then my Duet or 828mk2 and FW400 drive. I may order another one and keep the 828mk2 hooked up all of the time. For $40 it seems a deal.

Apple's base machine prices are sooooo competitive. They seem to make their money with ram upgrades and hard drive upgrades. Such a tremendous mark-up.

So I never buy ram or hard drive upgrades from Apple.

However, I can see good reasons to buy from Apple -- you are a new user and just want something ready to go out of the box.

Or you are a company and you only want to deal with one vendor in case you ever have problems with the machine. Just let Applecare deal with it all.

Probably other reasons, but I don't fit either of those profiles.
