Yamaha PM1000 Custom-built Preamp

Post by gearboy »

I don't know if anyone on here has had a chance to hear these preamps yet, but let me tell you, they sound great.

This is mine, built by a TOMB member from Texas. I've had it since October, but only really started working it into my recording sessions during the last month. It is built from the talkback module of a 1970s Yamaha PM1000 console, so there is no EQ. However, it still has transformers in it, and it sounds great! Instrument DI and phantom, and outputs for both the transformer and a direct out that bypasses it.

For bass, this thing rules. I just turn both chicken-head knobs all the way to the right (the left one is gain and the right one is volume). The output on this thing is a little low compared to my other preamps, and I don't know what it will sound like when hitting it with a low-level mic like and SM7 or other dynamics. However, for an instrument DI (or a VI DI, I'm sure) and higher output mics it's the bee's knees.

Again, these preamps/channelstrips are pulled from the 1970s Yamaha PM1000 consoles:

You can do a search on the interweb to look up the history and design of these consoles. Basically, they supposedly sound similar to Neve preamps. Now, I've never used a Neve preamp, and I know that the internet is full of BS, but let me tell you, this thing sounds great for bass. I'm looking forward to tracking electric guitars through it this week, as well as tracking snare at some point, too.

Recorded bass again tonight. Holy crap this thing just does a nice amount of justice to my American P-Bass. I played the Tele through it ont he same setting (both knobs all the way wide open) and there is a total thick distortion. For bass it is much more subtle, but for strummed guitar, it's nuts.

I kind of like having this thread all to myself.

good stuff jeff, i love it when cheap vintage gear can be worked upon to sound good and full of character. I've looked into PM1000 projects myself, and have lost a good number of eBay auctions trying to steal a channel at a good price.

Glad to know they have your stamp of approval!
why would i want to skin a cat?

Definitely for that old fat P-Bass sound. And I hear that they are great on snare as well, though I haven't ran through it yet for that. Although, I may reamp some snare through the DI tonight just for fun!
