i want to replace a recorded kik drum sound/ how do you do?

Post by J.B. »

have a kik drum sound from a recording session that didn't work out too well.
all the other sounds work fabulously so i want to try and improve the kik drum sound so it's not bringing everything else down.

is there a way to convert the kik track to MIDI so i can use a different kik sound/sample?

is there any way to do this?

thanks

You can try the trigger plug-in or a lot of people swear by aptrigga. If you use the trigger plug you'll have to have a VI of some sort or an outboard MIDI device to generate a sample or sound. The level of bleed on your original kick track is a factor no matter which route you go.

I've always wondered how to do this, myself. Not so much for drum replacement, but augmentation. Back in college, one of the profs demonstrated using a low frequency sine wave to boost the sub-end of the kick drum. We were using Pro Tools, and I think he was using a compressor to track volume on the kick, and then feeding it to the level of an aux track with a tone generator inserted in.

How would you do this with DP5?

Wow, yes! So, take a bass tone tuned to the song, and trigger a gate to open with side chain. I never thought of that. You could use any synth to generate the tone.

I used trigger to augment a snare drum. However, I could not get it to drop things perfectly in time, and had to go in and move every single hit to line up. PITA if you ask me. However, if anyone can help out explaining how to make this work better, I would be quite happy. I have two more songs that need to have the snare doubled to cut through the mix.

Hi guys,

Put "Trigger" plugIn on your snaredrumtrack.

Make sure, that multirecord is on.

Create a miditrack and choose the trigger plugin as an input.

That‘s nearly it.

Route the output of the Miditrack to a softwaresampler like the nanosampler or modulo12 or whatever you want to use.

If you have trouble with the triggersignal you can put a eq in front of the trigger plugin and hicut/lowcut everything out.

Good Luck and have a great snare :-)

Trigger plugin from DP works but is not an easy job, at least for me.

I use Ap trigga and for that price, it's a great way to easily replace or add drum sounds.
It's easy to use and the latency is unnoticeable.

There is a demo on the website, it's worth to try.

My 2 cents. (I'm not working for them... :) )

Has anyone had any appreciable success converting audio to MIDI (DP5 manual, p 850)? I've done the conversion, but only to see how it worked. I haven't used the converted MIDI data to replace audio-- percussion or otherwise. Just wondering if it was more than it's worth...

If Ap trigga is the ticket, I'll pay $57 to be able to save myself like 6-10 hrs of work that I need to do this week or next. I've downloaded the demo and will mess with it this evening or tomorrow night.

Trigger in DP was a total hassle, and I spent some serious time with it. All I was attempting to do was generate MIDI from an isolated and high-passed snare drum track. It didn't drop a single MIDI note in time with the snare, not matter how I tweaked it. Total PITA. I literally had to line everything up with the mouse.

Trigger: I've seen it track a machine gun kick track very well and seen it not work at all. It's very track dependent. By that I mean bleed/isolation issues mostly. If you feed it into an eq and gate, or preferably an expander before the trigger and finesse it you can get a lot further, but only so far sometimes.

As far as the audio route, the Dynamics plug allows for side chaining, like to add a 60hz to augment a kick, etc. You want to use it in expander mode on the signal you want to add. Send your kick to an aux and use that aux as the sidechain input of the Dynamics plug in the expander mode. You'll have to figure whatever you're adding on your own.

I hope I got that right! My manual is in a box somewhere as we just moved. I have to really think about this VS ducking as I don't do these moves very often and have to stop and think which is which.

Screw Trigger.

Apptrigga is a great inexpensive and powerful app.

I am 100% blown away and sold on apTrigga. Worked perfectly immediately in real time. I need to replace a snare (actually, double it!) so that it cuts through thick mixes better. I sampled my friend's Omar Hakim snare when we were recording drums two years back. Dropped it into apTrigga and immediately it worked flawlessly.

I am purchasing it immediately after posting this. Totally worth more that $57.

Perhaps you mean Sound Replacer? Using Beat Detective to replace the kick would still require quite a lot of manual work. Sound Replacer is a really easy way to add or replace drum samples, I rarely mix a record without it.

Slightly off topic, but since we are talking about drums and replacing, we can go a step farther and talk about recording a live drummer and using apTrigga and then replacing those sound with electronic percussion. 808s, 909s... And if we're talking about 808 and 909 sounds, I feel like these are the best for the money:

http://www.goldbaby.co.nz/tape808.html
http://www.goldbaby.co.nz/tape909.html

And these are free...
http://www.goldbaby.co.nz/freestuff.html

I used a Tape606 kick drum sample last night to augment the existing kick drum and it sounds great. I'll be picking up both the Tape808 and Tape909 Battery packs in the next few weeks.

Also the Cassette 808 sounds fantastic, believe it or not. It's a cool freebie to add to your electronic percussion palette.

Loving apTrigga.
