Installing tiger on new mac pro?

Post by bradswan »

Just bought a mac pro 2.66 xeon quad with Leopard installed. Apple says I can't install Tiger on this machine. Is there a work around, like maybe another e-sata drive with Tiger only on it while leaving the original drive with Leopard on it?
Mac Pro Quad 2.66 5gigs ram, OSX.6.1, DP 7.02 Apogee ADX 16, Mytec DAC, Mackie MCU, MTP-AV, Stylus RMX, Ivory, EWQL, Plug Sound Pro, Mach V, Reason, MX4, Ethno-instrument, Virtual Guitarist2, Do I really need all this stuff? UAD-1,2, Waves L3, PSP, Altiverb, Neodynium, AT 5 various other plugz.

If you check on MacUser, AccellerateYourMac, and other forums, you'll find there is a way to install 10.4.11, but it's not easy.* Also, if you've got a new graphics card that wasn't supported by Tiger, like the GE8000, you're out of luck. I'm thinking it's generally a bad idea to order a new Mac unless you've got an older system you can do your work on until all the software you use is Leopard ready and free of "issues."

*The method I heard about was to pull your system drive, and put it in an old Mac Pro (pre-2008), install 10.4.11, and put it back in your new MacPro.

Since Apple didn't make Intel standalone installers available at retail, this technically is a violation of the license, but as I see it, Apple has forced your hand if you need to run Tiger on a new MacPro.

Thank you for the info. Wow I'm just dumbfounded by Apple's decision to limit us this way. I think there's a bad apple in the bunch now!

There's Apple's way, and there's the highway. Take your pick.
