Audiodesk cannot find hardware
Brand new to Motu and I cannot not get my intel macBook to recognize my motu traveller when I launch AudioDesk or more other daw programs (nor does anything come up in system preferences or when I try to run Motu Audio Setup. I am connecting via Firewire, I have tried both ports, different cables and the bus power does work when the ac adapter is not plugged in, have tried using up to dat firewire drivers. any ideas what I am missing?

Either your computer's firewire port is broken, the Traveler is broken, or you don't have the correct version of the driver installed. You can eliminate each of these possibilities like so:
-test a different firewire device with the MacBook
-Check the MOTU firewire audio driver version: go to /System/Library/Extensions; find MOTUFireWireAudio.kext, select it, and go to File menu > Get Info. In the info window you'll find the version number. If it's not 1.4.6, then you don't have the latest version installed.
-test the Traveler with a computer other than the MacBook
-test a different firewire device with the MacBook
-Check the MOTU firewire audio driver version: go to /System/Library/Extensions; find MOTUFireWireAudio.kext, select it, and go to File menu > Get Info. In the info window you'll find the version number. If it's not 1.4.6, then you don't have the latest version installed.

thankyou for the responses,
first, the driver and audiodesk versions are up to date (1.4.6 driver and audiodesk 2.11, which according to motu is compatible with intel). My firewire port is working as well (my Lacie external drive works just fine and shows up in system profiler, whereas the traveler did not). The traveler does turn on and draws bus power from the computer when firebus power is enabled and the ac adapter is unplugged. I checked the firmware as well and that appears to be up to date as well (v. 1.07) I have yet to try the traveler on another computer, but I will do so asap. anyone have any more ideas? thanks for the help

thanks for your response:
my macbook has a Lucent firewire chip.
I read what that other post said regarding the problems with this chip and audio interfaces (relative to the TI chips apple was formally using) but I actually had Motu's tech support on the phone when I saw this post and checked the chip (what are the odds of that) and good old Ronan said that this is only an issue with PCs and that any traveler device should connect to a mac regardless of the new chipset if the motu is working properly. He suggested I ship the item to motu so that they can send a replacement that works...
Does this cost money or is it covered by motu considering it's their fault? Should I instead, return the defective unit to musiciansfriend and try something else? anybody else been in a similar situation?
any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

MOTU's interfaces are great, so I would not try anything else.argyl2 wrote: Does this cost money or is it covered by motu considering it's their fault? Should I instead, return the defective unit to musiciansfriend and try something else?
I avoided their interfaces for a few years out a weird reverse snobbery -- I thought I should be able to use something cheaper to make music. However I eventually got a MOTU interface and i LOVE IT. Cue mix etc is wonderful. I regret not buying a MOTU interface before. And when it is time to upgrade, I will buy a MOTU again.
Something you may not know -- MOTU writes its own firewire audio driver. Almost all of the other firewire interfaces rely on APPLE'S built in firewire audio driver. Which can have problems -- latency, etc.
So now that that part is out of the way:
It seems you have two options.
If your unit is new, MOTU will exchange for free as you are under warranty.
SO.
1. You could either exchange it with MOTU.
or
2. You could do an RMA with musicians friend and have them ship you another traveler unit.
I guess I would go with whoever can do it quickest. But I might lean toward MOTU, as Musicians Friend can be somewhat flaky.
Best of Luck!

I have the same issue with an ultralite.
Bought from MF as well.
Somehow I doubt that both of the interfaces are defective.

If only motu was as 'flaky' as mf.
I would return it to mf - complimentary shipping
and faster service. Give the old to UPS,
call MF with the tracking number and
a new one is on the way.
Hopefully that resolves the issue.
I'll try my ultralite on a g4.
If it doesn't work there either it's going back.
just got my traveler back
motu called me a week ago, to tell me that they could find no problems with it so I guess I'm screwed and it's going back to musicians friend
any feedback
macbook intel core duo 2.16
2 gig ram
lucent firewire chip
by the way, the computer works fine with Logic Pro 8 and mackie 1620 w/onyx firewire option

I got it to work by reinstalling everything.
