Well, here is one other thing to try -- I found it here:

http://www.silentway.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=189

----

Reset your 896HD to factory settings:
Silentway Posted: Tue Aug 01, 2006 8:38 pm Post subject: reset 896HD

I just had this method suggested to me by MOTU support for my 896HD. This resets the circuit board (mother board?) inside the 896HD:

1) Unplug ALL cables from the 896HD.

2) Double check that the power cord is really unplugged.

3. Switch the voltage switch on the side of the 896HD, from your setting (110 in the US) to the other setting and back a few times.

4) Make sure you've set the voltage switch back to the right setting for your country.

5) Plug everything back in.

If that doesn't help, I see no other option for you except working with motu.

1. Call them (don't email them) first thing in the morning when they get up.

2. Be at your computer when you call them.

3. Tell them everything you have done.

4. Be nice and ask them to help you.

I ass-umed you were using your mac's built in firewire port. Is that not the case?

If not, MOTU only approves specific firewire chipsets:

http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technot ... mcia-cards
MOTU FireWire audio interfaces and PCI/PCMCIA FireWire card chip sets

MOTU recommends using strictly FireWire PCI/PCMCIA cards based on the Texas Instrument chipset.

There's an incompatibility between the NEC chip found in some FireWire cards and the MOTU FireWire line of interface.

If the FireWire installer warns you that you're running a FireWire card with the NEC chip, you should replace said card with a card that uses the TI (Texas Instruments) or LSI (formlery Lucent/Agere) chip.

Keyspan, Sonnet, Miglia, and ADS are a few of the many brands using the TI or LSI FireWire chips. Note that not all cards by a given manufacturer use the same chipset, so please check with the manufacturer of the FireWire card before purchasing it to ensure it has a TI or LSI chip. Many combo USB/FireWire cards do not a use TI or LSI chip, so a dedicated FireWire card is recommended.
-----
If you are using a third party firewire card, switch to your mac's builtin ports and see what happens.

896HD user here.

Howdy!

I've just read your posts and I'm feeling so bad for you.
Must really suck having all that nice gear but nothing works. =(

Anywho, I do all my work with a Mac (G4) and 896HD. And have used nothing but Macs all my life, the most important thing I've learnt is to NOT stay at the cutting edge of technology if you want things to work instead of wasting time fault finding.
I guess this applies to any platform. (Unix, windows, etc)

Everything's working in my setup and I'm able to complete projects.
I'm using the 896HD with the latest drivers BUT with MacOS 10.4.11.
As I know for a FACT that any new OS needs time to develop (fix bugs).
(I always try to stay a step behind to avoid problems)

I know your Mac came with 10.5 but if it's not too much trouble perhaps try installing 10.4 instead. I know this combo works because I'm typing this post on a brand new Imac with a massive screen. (my friend's)
It runs beautifully with 10.4.11.

My (now ancient) G4 also runs 10.4.11 no worries. 896HD working fine.
And I stick with this setup 'cause I know it WORKS. And I need to get work done.

You've got a nice machine there and interface. I hope you make the transition to the "Mac way of thinking" without too much dramas (more than you have already!).

I think you'll find Macs are actually a no brainer, unlike what people's opinion seems to be.
That's why I love 'em!

MOTU's a great company and I know they'll support 10.5 completely but it takes time to write code and adapt to new technology.
This applies to all developers.

Best of luck and welcome to Mac/MOTU world! =)

Hey again!

I think you might be able to get it from your apple dealer as a special order. Don't quote me on that but!

Just make sure it'll install in your model of Mac (Universal binary), do a clean install (erase and install), don't forget to repair permissions BEFORE and AFTER updating/installing anything.
If needing to update to 10.4.11 download and run the Combo installer manually.
It's ok to use software update but I preffer not to use it on OS updates. (for programs, security updates, etc is ok)

All the best!

I doubt than 10.4 will install on your machine.

Zjcc56, you really are going to have to work this out with MOTU.

There is no other option.

It sounds like you have contacted them several times.

Somehow it needs to be bumped to the next level.

Call them and explain everything that you have tried. Tell them that you need to have the issue resolved. Be NICE, but tell them that you need to get this fixed.

Best of luck.

I am using an 896HD and a 896 with both 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 and it works perfectly*.

The * is there to tell you that this statement was true until I installed the latest version of quick time. 7.4 I believe (can't remember the sub version). Now, anytime something uses the quicktime video API, the output audio devices stop working, well, both the MOTUs. The internal audio still works.

So the system is highly usable for working on music, I just have to reboot if I watch a video clip or something.

But, the point is, your 896HD should work if it is not broken.

Well, I can guarantee you that other companies would charge you $80.00 just to look at it.

Then repairs would be charged Parts plus a Hefty Hourly Bench Charge.

Happy to hear you are getting it fixed!
