Importing Wave files

Post by sugardilly »

Can someone please help me with this issue.

I just got some WAVE files from a PT session which I've imported to DP 5.13. The files all work fine except that every time I open the song I have to wait for each file to load individually and also the commands also react slowly.

When I open any files done within DP everything works quickly and proficiently.

Help Please.

Wave Files and DP5.13

Post by sugardilly »

I have the same problem.

Whenever I open the song I have to wait for the Wave files to load and it does take long to react.

I was looking for help for this problem for a while.

I hope someone can help.

How are you importing the files - frag and drop into the left side of the Tracks Overview? and is the automatic conversions on (in the preferences)?

What a coincidence-- two members with the same name having the exact same problem!!

Interesting to have found this thread because I have three PT sessions I need to get into DP and am concerned that this will be a problem.

However, my first questions would be how large are the files? My second question would be with respect to the sample rate. I'm looking at one folder of PT wav files now-- just piano and vocal-- and the size of the folder is 563 MB. If I recall that session was done at 88.2-- and there are only 8 files in the folder for maybe 4-5 minutes of music. I need to give it a closer look.

Also, I'm beginning to wonder if it really does make a difference whether one imports the file directly into the soundbites menu or if one just drags files from the Finder into DP's Tracks Overview or Sequence Editor. I've never had a problem with the drag and drop method, but the soundbites import menu has given me mixed results.

What it sounds like is that DP isn't saving the wav-to-sd2 conversion when it quits OR that the files are large or abundant that it just takes time for the project to load.

It's late at the moment, but I'm loading in one of the projects now into DP and will chime back in shortly....

Okay-- it took a while to get the files into DP because the size, but it wasn't bad. I dragged the files into the Sequence Editor. No problems.

I then closed the project without quitting DP, then reopened the project. Literally, the project opened in about 2-3 seconds!! Seemed to good to be true. So then I quit DP and restarted, opened the project. Same thing: 2-3 seconds.

Additional questions:

1. What version of DP and OSX are you using?

2. What computer? CPU speed?

3. How much RAM do you have installed?

4. Have you tried flushing your Undo History lately?

5. Is the hard drive you are using one also used on the PT session from another computer? Was the original PT session done on PC? If so, you will need to back up the files from that hard drive to another drive or disc, then reformat the drive to MacOS Extended.

You may just want to move the files to a different hard drive (MacOS Extended, of course) and create a new project

That's all I can think of at the moment.

What? Does 5.13 now play wav native without first converting them?

Right.
So what could be going on there after the files are converted?
It's not like there's any background processing after the fact. The files are converted to sd2 and then it's done. I think.....

Now THAT would make DP seriously more fun! :D:D:D

Blow up a few .wav files before you drop them in. Maybe with a rail-gun?

I spoke to the tech on this today. DP says the .wav files are converted to .sd2 upon import... or frag and drop whatever gets you going...

the truth is look in your audio folder. they are still .wav files even after a thorough FRAGGING>.....

Shooshie I await your comment?

That's fraggalicious, Greg. :D

Sugardilly, that 1GB is borderline.

I've got no idea, Waxman. I'm not using .wav files much these days. After DP6, however, me and the wave will be one.

Well forget the AAF from LOGIC and then to DP thing....

Can't add tracks to the project after that. Weird science and VOODOO going on....

DP has only one option for import. It is BIG WAVE DAVE'S UNIVERSAL IMPORT METHOD. Make a SMF... Save each track as .wav or .sd2.

Drag or Frag them into the file one at a time so DP will play nice. Anything else is full of problems...

DP 6 please hurry....
