Motu 8pre with 8GB of RAM / XP x64 (SOLVED)
Hello,
I just bought a Motu 8pre, and it does not play sound when I have 8 GB of RAM installed. The sound output gets very crackled and distorted. It seems that MIDI input still works. I test both in Winamp, and in ASIO mode in Reaper.
I have 4 sticks of 2GB of RAM, in an Asus p5n32e sli plus motherboard. Now, if one stick of RAM is removed (leaving 6GB installed), then the 8pre works! It also works with 4GB. And with 8GB in XP 32-bit Professional.
I have been running this machine for a year with 8 GB of RAM, and it is stable. I did run Memtest86+ and Prime95 for over 72 hours, with no errors. The machine dual boots XP32 in which the 8pre also works. The RAM is definitely good and adequately cooled.

Ah...so in Vista x64 you get sputters with 4GB of RAM, but not with 2GB?minerva wrote:I have four 2gb pieces and if I boot with one (2gb total) it works perfectly. If I boot XP Pro 32bit it does not matter. Vista x64 is the same way so this is a common problem. Sometimes there is no sound playback, others it plays but sputters badly.
But XP Pro 32bit sounds good with 4GB of RAM?
Yes that is because the 32bit OS will not address more than 3.25GB (on this board) RAM.strungdown wrote:Ah...so in Vista x64 you get sputters with 4GB of RAM, but not with 2GB?minerva wrote:I have four 2gb pieces and if I boot with one (2gb total) it works perfectly. The drivers are clearly busted and we need a fix sooner than later!
