Video out to Hd Monitor

Post by pastiche27 »

I haven't updated Since DP4. I have been using a sony firewire box to output 4:3 content.

Does DP5 support HD video playback through other means beyond getting a motu V3hd?

Can the board please recommend Video cards either PCI express , or firewire that DP5 can support for video playback?

There are many options out there for video playback outside the computer, the V3HD is one of the newest and one of the best IMHO. A better video card certainly helps with performance on the computer itself, but you'll not get full screen video with full resolution the way you will on an external preview monitor. This is why video interfaces exist.

What exactly do you need to see/preview? Are you composing/mixing to film, or are you actually doing the video for live playback, etc?
Thank you,

Thanks brad . I am composing/mixing/sound design for an animated short that is 1080i resolution that i would like to have a live preview using a HDTV..

This is my first step into HD and I now have a computer that I can work with that format while composing. I am use to playing a quicktime NTSC resolution via firewire out to my monitor. I was wondering if DP can now do this using an HDMI PCI card out.

Does the V3 even do this? the v3 is out of my price range unfortunately.

I'm not sure what video processing cards DP supports, if any. I do know that currently, there is no support for the V3HD in DP. I am willing to bet in the future that might change as their primary focus to get the product to market was making sure it was tight with FinalCut.

DP supports all QuickTime-compatible video output hardware. Basically, if QuickTime Player will play video through the PCI HDMI output card, then DP can do it. Currently, the V3HD is not supported by DP for QuickTime movie output.

pretty interesting thread...

I'm working with film and I find that DV is not as sharp as the digibeta I'm supplied with

I ideally need something that connects via a firewire..

you think dp 6 will support the v3 thing?

Hard to say, but I did have a meeting with MOTU not that long ago---and my gut-feeling is that that not too far down the road, you'll see full support for V3HD ad DP.

Hmm just realized I might provide more information.
1 - The setup isn't up and running I am building it for a client.
2 - We'll be using a new ish ( haven't decided ) intel mac.
3 - Would like to use 2 displays with the mac built in video card and run picture exclusively out the BlackMagic card to a 3rd display.

Thanks

I'm still waiting for an all-in-one video card to be introduced. All the IOs that are either FW or PCI based have limitations that are bound to be addressed in future products.

One of the limitations is having the hardware do some of the codec processing. So far, there are only two codecs provided in hardware: ProRes in the AJA line, and Pro Res and DVCProHD in the MOTU line. Avid not counted, as they exclude all third party apps, meaning DP from using their hardware. Of course Avid hardware will allow ProTools. Sort of.

Before I'd buy anything and expect it to work with DP, I'd suggest taking your installer disk to a dealer, and ask them to let you load DP and make sure it works. I've seen nothing in the literature or ads about any video io box being compatible with DP or Logic or any other DAW for that matter. And I would assume that compatibility with any other products would be a selling feature that they'd want to emphasize.

My understanding is the Black Magic card does not work with DP. Why not just buy an additional standard graphic's card and use a DVI to HDMI adapter?

I have an HDX-SDI, which works like a charm in Final Cut Pro and After Effects, but surprisingly, doesn't work in Color or DP... Too bad, cause I really like it, and I would love to be able to edit to a full HD picture on my Sony monitor... Maybe soon... :|
