I just re-read the flick-r post that went with that scary Ableton-like GUI overhaul, and am now confused as to whether this was some hobbyist's idea of what he'd like it to look like or whether this is for real what DP 6 is going to be. I'm also having trouble identifying who posted that, but don't visit flick-r and don't know much about what/who they are.

My apologies if this is obvious to everyone else; I thought that link was posted to show us a snapshot of the new DP6 interface (was it?).

That is not the new interface. It's something a designer/musician (ajkandy) did in his spare time after having a bit of frustration with DP's current GUI. He posted a link in the off-topic forum like a year ago and it generated some debate. That is all.

Do not worry. DP's interface will not look like this!

As much as I don't like that mockup, I think the guy who did it actually had some decent ideas. He obviously knew his stuff when it came to design principles. I don't think he represented them too well in practice with that particular design.

Here's looking forward to MOTU's new vision.

Looking forward to the new DP6 as always.

Seems like it's mooted for Q1 according to this blog:

Shooshie - looks like DP6 has it - see below :)

DP 6 will also include support for Broadcast WAV files, which means your sequence••™s audio files no longer need to be in Sound Designer II format.
That's fantastic! Another pro-hurdle behind us!

upgraded UI? wonder if theve worked out there's more than one button on a mouse yet!!

right click anywhere on a track select automation parameter anyone?

some sounds nice tho - wav file support? maybe less issues with file corruptions? zoomabale tracks overview might be nice - we'll end up with 2 seq editors! haha!

I may be holding back to find out if they's fixed the deal breaker in 5.12 /5.13 for me - inconsistent quicktime playback offset ( DV PAL here..) - how can I attempt to work to picture with things going in and out of sync?

5.11 is now working for me very well - ( found my fix for crash on save!!) so pretty happy at the minute!

exciting news tho! I'll have my ears on unicornation for sure!

You needn't be. DP has always been designed by musicians who know what it is like to use this stuff. They're not going to turn it into a Logic type interface. (if they did, I'd retire now)

The one link that I saw for a small image preview scares me though -- very gaudy and distracting colours
Don't worry; that was a joke. DP would never become like that.

I forgot about that, it's been so long since I used DP, partly because of this issue.

13) TIGHTER INTEGRATION WITH FINAL CUT. Not sure of this one... Jim didn't hear it to well, but there's some sort of tighter ability for moving files between FCP and DP. Something about DP being able to read an XML file or something. My apologies... this should all start becoming clear when MOTU publishes this on their site and more and better information becomes available.
These two factors are much more important than they seem on the surface. I know a lot of guys here do not use DP for film scoring and thus don't really need these video features, but the addition of these features is huge for film scoring. I think it is also a direct result of MOTU releasing their V3HD product for video. Them having to write drivers and video features for that product is going to continue to have a direct affect on DP's features and being able to interface with new video standards.

Many HD only shows are being done at HD frame rates from beginning to end of POST. Adding HD video support in DP is huge. And...on my last gig...We had to transfer an entire sound mix from a final cut pro session and put it into DP for eventual layback to DA-88s for delivery. We used OMF and prayed everything was going to be in synch. It was with careful attention...but sometimes it is not if some random setting is output wrong on the FCP end. But, with tighter FCP integration and the ability to reference XML files...DP will be (or is on the path to be) on par with Pro Tools in terms of being able to handle FCP and even AVID session sound mixes for major motion pictures.

This has simply made my night.

I will be at NAMM on Sunday to see all of this for myself. Now, I can't wait.

:D :D
Regards,

Brian Ralston

Oh crap, now I'll have to wait impatiently for the upgrade. Even though I'm pretty excited, I'm also pretty scared about the UI changes. Let's just hope they didn't change the straight and clear design we all love...

I'm wondering if they're gonna make me regret having spent 600$ on Altiverb?
