The second error message worries me more.
Try deleting your MOTU Audio System Prefs from your User Library>Preferences>Digital Performer folder.
Reset your audio interface to factory default, whatever it might be (should be in your hardware's manual). If it's firewire, try a fresh cable. If it's a PCI (e/x) interface, pull out the card and re-seat it, making sure it's firmly in place. Some have said that re-seating the card actually resets it, fwiw.
Check to see if you have the latest drivers for your audio interface. If you do, reinstall it anyway.
One thing to keep in mind, when DP goes down with a specific error code from MOTU, contact MOTU with those code numbers. Chances are that this is an error they've anticipated, and they will more than likely already have a list of causes and solutions ready to offer.

Also try replacing the firewire cable and try another firewire port.
I have got those messages (well the first one) when i've accidentally knocked the firewire lead out of the laptop.
It means the audio interface has gone offline without you changing it from prefs.

Creativity, some digital stuff and analogue things that go boom. crackle, bits of wood with strings on them that go twang

Those make sense, guys, and I appreciate the help. I did every single one of your tips mentioned above.
After fiddling with cables and swapping firewire ports between my mixer and hard drive, I'm almost certain that the firewire port on the front panel of my G5 is whacked out. It seems to have a crappy connection - on and off and on and off...
So, thanks for the tips!
