Conventional wisdom is that if you are on the mac, firewire is more reliable for audio than USB.
Basically firewire was designed from the ground up to handle video and audio data.
OTOH, USB was designed from the ground up to support mice and keyboard data.
Although USB has been updated I don't think it is as good for video and audio data.
It seems like motu is backordered on the firewire unit, though. I would call one of the sites and see when they are expecting more. This one by the way has one of the best prices I have see on it new. I have bought from them, they are reliable:

If you are in a hurry there is always ebay.
Here's a dealer (99.3% Positive Feedback) with three brand new ones available, 725.00 each:

Re: Usb or Firewire
I asked a tech guy at MOTU that question once, and he said there should be no difference. However, it appears that in sustained throughput tests, firewire is somewhat faster.SLTRock wrote:Hey!

See http://www.cwol.com/firewire/firewire-vs-usb.htm
But it's possible that USB is "good enough" unless you're pushing the limits.
