Dear Unicornation
This is my first post here so hello!
I recently sold nearly all my analogue gear (including my Mackie 32:8 and a lot of synths) so that I could mostly go digital but I'm a bit confused as to how I should connect my 828 and the finalizer. I currently run my active monitors straight out of the 828 but want to connect the Finalizer in the chain. I'm also keen to have my Tascam CDR recorder as part of the picture too. The finalizer has AES/EBU in/out, SPDIF in/out optical and coaxial and balanced audio ins and outs, the MOTU has SPDIF in/out optical and coaxial too.
Should I run my speakers from the finalizer's balanced outs, a S/PDIF optical cable from the out of the 828 to the optical SPDIF in of the Finalizer and run a pair of cables from the coaxial in/outs of the CDR and Finalizer.
Will this work? I've never done any digital cabling like this before so would like to get some expert help.
If anyone can guide me that would be great.
Many thanks
Damon

Why do you want a Finalizer in your monitoring chain? That's not how it's usually done. How you connect your system will be dependent on how you will use your Finalizer, so it's an important point to consider. Have you thought of using plug-ins instead of a Finalizer?
I have a hard time visualizing other people's routings, but I'm sure we can help you here.
My first inclination is to tell you that you'd probably benefit from some kind of Mackie Big Knob device (there are several out there). It's tough running a whole DAW system with basically just an interface and still having basic studio functions available (mostly monitoring related). It depends on your needs and workflow of course. I don't own an 828 so someone who does can surely offer some specifics.
Cheers
Phil
