Wanted to add in that most SATA drives spin down of their own accord when sitting for a while, regardless of what you've set in the energy saver preferences .. but check out versiontracker.com .. there are a few utilities that change the settings on the drive itself that might solve this. I've had this issue with my drives as well even with them set to never spin down in energy saver.Originally posted by qo:
This sounds like Power Management stuff i.e. drives going to sleep. What are your System Prefs set to? I'm not at a mac right now, but I _think_ the thing you need to look at in Preferences is Performance. There should be an option that essentially prohibits the drives from spinning down.Originally posted by maintiger:
does anybody else have the experience that the drive icon does nothing for a few seconds after clicking on it, then the wheel spins a few more seconds before it (the drive window) opens? I'm thinking that my problem with the spikes might be linked to this occurrence. It happens both with my second sata internal 250 GB drive and with my external firewire drives. My dual 867 never had this problem, when you clicked on the icon for a drive it always opened right away. - and I had four separate drives on that machine.

Hi David.
What you are saying is very interesting. They don‘t even want to admit there is a problem! That‘s a bit arrogant
So maybe it‘s time for a change in software?
I am mostly doing acoustic improv things. I can use the software that came with my Metric Halo to record the tracks. So what I need is a software for automation as I am using a summing box and rerecord the new stereomix.
Which software would be good for that? Have anyone tried the Soundtrack Pro?

Hi.
I have just downloaded DP 4.6 and it‘s the same good old spikes!
Which means I will have to continue mixing in Cubase SX1.

I have the top of the range (until very recently) dual 2.5 Ghz model with loads of RAM and I get the same issues at 44.1 16 bit, so it's nothing to do with that.
MOTU are simply wrong on this one and need to look into it.

Hey, guys, try disabling the Dashboard. I did that and my spikes stopped 100%. You can read about it in this thread, and you can pick up some methods to disable the Dashboard in this thread.

Re: Processor Spiking with 4.52, Tiger
I've experienced this problem to various degrees. When its been really bad (i.e. unplayable because of non-stop red spike), the only thing I've done that's been able to solve the problem is to remove all plugins and start over (plugin wise). Even if I bring back all the same plugs (or more) the problem goes away for that file.

Curiouser and curiouser. I'll have to try that, as opposed to Dashboard disabling. Sounds interesting. And strange!Originally posted by Tom Z:

Hi
Last night I came home after a gig and could not sleep. Went to the TC discussion site and found out that TC had released a new update for mac users. They did not tell us though. It was a secret....WHY????????
Downloaded it. And it worked! I have worked on a mix which is about 2 hours and I have had no spikes. Not correct. Spikes, but no noise which means no pops or cracks.
I think, at last DP and TC have started working together. Concratulations.
