Will the 828 work with the new iMac Agere chipset?

Dear Unicorns

I just purchased a brand new iMac 24" which I think came with the new poor Agere firewire chipset. Which is a real bummer because I just found out today this chipset causes problems with certain audio devices, including MOTU hardware. You can read all about it at the RME forum, there is a sticky on top. Anyway, I would like to go buy a 2nd handed 828 later this night but Id like to know if this unit is going to work with my iMac (24" model MID 2007, according to Mactracker). The 828 will later be daisy chained with another MOTU brand new device with Black Lion Audio modification. I really do like that sound a lot!! But will these units work with my expensive new computer?

PS: My Panasonic mini DV camcorder which is connected via FW400 (directly into the iMac) does work like a charm. No drivers, no hickups, no crashes. It just works. Is it possible that my imac, which suppose to have an evil FW chipset, is not affected by this issue? Btw, I run the latest update of Leopard and everything (except for a few minor OS glitches) works beautifully. Cheers

You know, I would try calling MOTU about it.

Call and say you have a pre-sales question (that is, don't ask for technical support).

They will find somebody to take your question.

They have been really helpful to me in the past about this sort of thing.

Another possibility is to call your dealer and see what they know, but personally I would rather get the info from MOTU.

Don't know if this helps you but I got a 20" iMac last week and haven't had any problems using my old Motu 828II or transferring files using FW Target disk mode from old old G4 iMac. I've only been able to test playback as I haven't upgraded to DP5 yet.

Hi All

I would also be interested in this, as I am considering getting one of these IMacs (24 in/Dual Core 2.8 ) and want to use Logic 8 but need to know if there are any issues with the Firewire. My 828 mkii shows v1.01 on the Display, on power-up. My driver is at 3.3.

The issue he's referring to isn't with the 828's it's with the chipset in the iMac. If you follow the trail from RME forum to the Apple forum, some people are/were having issues with firewire on the new iMac, even with transferring files using FW Target Disk mode. As to whether or not you'll be affected, I don't know. I can say that I got a 20" iMac last week and it's been working just fine for me.

From browsing the RME posts, it appears that the issue only relates to the 24" model. Naturally, this is the one I had my eye on.
