Hi everyone,
I am thinking of getting a couple of 8pre's to use on location instead of dragging out my mixer. I have seen different problems on here and am just wondering what the opinions are of the people who own and/or use them.
I want to daisy chain 2 units and go firewire into a macpro which I dont own yet
Thanks folks,
Rick

I love mine! I've got it lightpiped into my 828mkII and it all works flawlessly. It's nice having the 20dB pad and phantom power switches on each channel too.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013)
2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, OS High Sierra 10.13.2, DP8.07, 256GB SSD
828mkII, 8Pre, Alesis M1 Active Mk2, Ext. FW drives, Yamaha fretless bass, Kay upright bass, Wechter acoustic/electric, trombone, baritone and a proclivity for polka music. (With sufficient quantities of beer) and I play country music.
i also simultaneously firewire my laptop into it and run guitar rig and SVX on that, so i can record guitar and bass tracks real time through them into my DAW without tasking my g5 (which is doing enough already...)!
fwiw, i did have to return the first one i received as channel 2 did not work - just hissed and buzzed and whined
and the toggles for pad and 48V are mounted / hardwired to the circut board itself, not the outer casing of the unit, so it feels like they might break loose if you tend to be heavy-handed...
I've got three 8 pre's hooked up to my MacBook pro for live recording. I've recorded sucesfully all 24 inputs live @ 24bit 48khz with no problems to the internal drive. I have been doing some location recording for live bands here in town and have not had a hiccup at all. The sound of the pres are pretty good, and for location/live stuff you are not going to tell much of a difference anyways. I'm looking at adding a fourth for 32 pre's. That would be an ultimate setup. They work awesome and would recommend them to anyone. I'm sure they would work just as well on a Macbook, or earlier g4 laptp as well.
