Using a PC as a sample player

Post by mythicwave »

I'm interested in setting up my PC as a sample player, probably with Mach 5 or Kontakt, maybe GigaStudio.

I use Digital Performer on the Mac and want to route PC audio back to the Mac. The reason I want to do this is because I have a powerful PC and don't want to invest in a new Mac now. The Mac is ok with Mach 5 version 1, but doesn't work with Mach 5 version 2. It also can't host really big samples like Kontakt's Akoustik piano. I currently have a MOTU 2408 hooked up to my Mac. I also have a MOTU Traveler. The PC only has a simple SoundBlaster card now.

Any suggestions for the best way to proceed? Maybe I should install Mach 5 on the PC and route audio from the PC's FireWire port to the Traveler, then to 2408. Or can I route audio directly from PC FireWire to Mac FireWire? Or do I need another audio card for the PC? Ideally, I'd like the PC audio to appear as audio tracks or audio instruments on the Mac.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

If the traveller hsa ADAT ... use the traveller on the PC and link it via ADAT to the 2408 on the Mac with adat sync/wordclock sync.

So your PC based sampler would be outputing audio through the adats of the traveller into the adats of the 2408 ... you'd have 8 digital inputs into DP this way representing the audio from the sampler instruments and other VSTi's that you may want to run on the PC. Everything stays digital.

I have not tried the firewire based solution you have suggested so cannot vouch for it ... personally i do not think it would work because to the best of my knowledge i do not think what you want done has ever been implemented in the FW spec.

hope this helps a bit.

PS: this is based on you not wanting to spend more money on interfaces.
PSS: please do not use the soundblaster on the PC.
