Don't we know it!! We've screwed up seriously as a surface bacteria. Our informed choices of fuels and their emissions are not to be excused. I'm not scientific enough to challenge or reconcile the theories and predictions of an ice age with global warming-- it's only that the irony of it all sticks out in my mind.
My folks used to refer to rain as "liquid sunshine". I guess my quip about ice being "global warming" was little more than an extension of that same family humor.
I do understand that the earth has a long history of running hot and cold; and humans, late to the dance, might be next on a long list of bacteria to go extinct as a result. Carelessness aside, there's also the population explosion which has accelerated use of fuel emissions and other chemicals which have contributed to conditions.
On a one-on-one basis, we're rather helpless to do anything about it. I mean, I recycle, keep the heat off, don't fill my tank more than once a month (probably less). I've intentionally limited my driving to 3500-4000 miles a year. It would be a lot less if I didn't live in LA.
We use less and pay more to do so, and yet mother nature will have her revenge no matter what. The only thing left to do is to stop living-- and mother nature apparently is determined to make that happen if we don't do it to ourselves first.
These are strange times for a lot of reasons. That's why each day must be celebrated as (hopefully) human consciousness is raised to higher levels of responsibility of caring for the planet, such as may be within our power to do so.

Ultimately, we are really only surface bacteria on this great planet and while we think we have the answers, we are at the mercy of nature at every moment.
What were we talking about? Oh yes, Happy Birthday!

Another wish made-- another candle blown out.
