can't monitor thru PB speakers as i record

Monitor while recording doesnt seem to work through internal powerbook speakers.
I record everything through an external firewire audio interface and I also use the inbuilt Powerbook audio out to monitor what I am recording sometimes
When I record a track on my firewire interface I cant here it through the headphone jack on the powerbook while playing or while recording.. naturally i have set it so the output of the track is in internal audio...
I click the speaker icon and or the headphones icon and it makes no difference BUT when I have recording on that track it suddenly comes throught the internal audio jack on the Powerbook.
In other words I can only monitor throught the powerbook audio out jack when that track has been recorded to..
What am I missing it has got to be simply surely.

PS trust me that I have to monitor this way sometimes due to how the Mlan firewire interface in my Motif ES works

Greetings to New Zealand! I love that place.
The only thing I can think of is in SET UP > CONFIGURE AUDIO SYSTEM>INPUT MONITORING MODE how you have the 2nd option set to. . .
This might not be a helpful hint, because I don't use a Firewire interface with my PB (not yet anyway!), but good luck.

Sometimes that option isn't there (monitor thru hardware )
You can also make an aux track with the same source but either
way will have the delayed audio ( latency ).
Doesn't your input device have a headphone jack?

i have tried both above suggestions included a pre fade listen to aux track set to the pb audio
yes the interface i have does have a headphone jack it is an mlan card in a Motif ES synth from Yamaha.. the ptoblem is as everything comes and goes thru the keyboard/interface in some states the audio is going around in a bit of a loop so that as i plug in a mic to the back i get the mic and the already recorded tracks back in the same inputs.. it is a bit confusing really hard to explain unless u know how Mlan on a Motf ES works.. it is fantastic apart from this one thing i cant seem to fix..

If it's as complicated as you describe, and if I'm understanding what you're trying to accomplish, you're just going to have to stick some kind of headphone distribution between your audio source and your interface so you can monitor your audio source pre-interface. There must be 50 ways to skin that cat.

Well i bit the bullet and ordered a Tascam FW 1082 today so I can have a decent audio interface control surface to work with
This had better work !
