electronic music VI

Post by musicarteca »

HI, I am a media music composer, and do most on my compositions on acoustic and ethnic music and also some jazz and orchestral, but recently I have been getting more requests on electronic music, so I am in the quest for a good VI. I had Reason in mind, but I am open to all suggestions.

Yeah, Reason is a do-it-all-box, and I've used it succesfully with electronic music production. Still, Stylus RMX would be my choice for electronic drums and percussion. For some excellent softsynths, I recommend for example ReFx Vanguard, GForce Imposcar, Spectrasonics Trilogy and Atmospehere (no UB yet though) and Logic's synths.

Alex, are you talking about a VI like Spectrasonics for "electronic" sounds?

Yes, anything that contrasts with natural instruments samplers and emulators.

Stylus RMX loaded with some Beat Bandit is a good combo for electronica, techno rhythms. Also MX4 give's an un-natural sound set that's strangely warm.. Atmosphere for airyness...

Reason is good but you will have to work with REWIRE to use it in DP:

ReWire Tutorial Article Digital Performer
http://www.propellerheads.se/news/tutor ... rticle=dp0

Easy enough, but kind of annoying, I think.

I would look at the following, they all work directly in DP -- there are downloadable demos of all of them I beleive. There are sound samples too:

-----------------------------------
Korg Legacy Analog Edition:

http://www.korg.com/gear/info.asp?a_prod_no=KLCAE2007

-------------------------------------

Rob Papen Blue that has already been mentioned

---------------------------------------
NI Komplete Synths -- this is a fantastic bundle -- MASSIVE, ABSYNTH, FM8, Pro-53 all in a very affordable bundle:

http://www.native-instruments.com/index ... letesynths

--------------------------------

MOTU MX4 -- A product that is amazing, also mentioned before:

Three VI synths that are must-haves in my book:

U-He Zebra 2 (if I had to pick one synth only, this'd be it...)
Native Instruments' Absynth (though I like Absynth 3 better...)
Camel Audio's Cameleon 5000

And the mother of all electronic VIs, Native Instruments' Reaktor 5 - With literally hundreds and hundreds of pre-made synths and effects the only electronic VI you'll ever need, and that's without getting into rolling your own... but it can be a processor hog.

Crystal is an excellent synth that's completely free, so you got to grab this one... there are a bunch more free synths out there, many of them quite outstanding. To take advantage of them all, be sure to get Audioease's VST-wrapper - considering how many free VST's there are, it's an excellent investment!

Plus don't forget that using more radical processes (filtering, granular processing, and various time-based processing) you can easily turn your fake acoustic sounds into fake electronic sounds... :D :D :D

Interesting, could you name some of those radical processors?

This is a good list.

There are, of course, many others that could be added, but this covers a lot.

I think Reason plus NI Komplete will give you the bread-and-butter here.

IMO you should try out Reason and the NI synths bundle. For the price, they offer a lot. If you don't have any electronic drum sounds to work with I'd go for Reason.
