828mkii available inputs and outputs
Hey everyone... I'm sure this has come up before but I have scoured this forum with no luck so here goes.
I have a 828mkii firewire version that I am running with XP (32 bit version, I think). I am using Pro Audio 8 (old Calkwalk program) as my editting software. I understand this is old software and I intend to upgrade to Sonar 7, but I don't think this is the root of my problem.
Here's my problem: When I use ANY software on my computer, including looking in the control panel under audio devices, I only have the following inputs and outputs:
Inputs:
MOTU Mix1 (this is anything that is input into MIX BUS 1 on the MOTU CueMix Console)
MOTU Analog (this is anything that is input into analog inputs 1&2)
MOTU Mic-Guitar (this is anything input into the Mic/Guitar inputs on the front of the 828)
MOTU SPDIF (this is anything input into the SPDIF input jack)
Outputs:
MOTU Phones (this goes to the headphone jack in the front of the 828)
MOTU Analog (this goes to Analog outputs 1&2)
MOTU Main Outs (this goes to the 828 Main Outputs)
MOTU SPDIF (this goes to the SPDIF output jack)
I have spent alot of time verifying that this data is correct and indeed sound comes and goes exactly as I have stated.
Seems like I should be able to access inputs 3-8 and outputs 3-8.
Does anyone know how to enable these in Windows?
Thanks!

i would check what drivers you have enabled in cakewalk.
828 MKII, sonar 6, default audio device in xp are motu, so when i turn it on all the setting bounce back to the mkII. otherwize my soundblaster comes up for audio.
in sonar i have all the 828 MKII dirvers enabled and none of the soundblaster output drivers enabled ( causes glitches )
you should find this in "options" - "audio" in your cakewalk program.
if you cant find it there look in the help files under "audio driver options".

thanks for the reply splatterbass.
Under options I can "see" all the devices I have already talked about. In my case they are all enabled, including my soundcard.
My issue is that not all the 828 inputs and outputs are available...to cakewalk or ANY program in XP.
If I go to the "Control Panel", under "Sounds and Audio Devices," and click on the "Audio" tab, I see sections for "Sound Playback," "Sound Recording," and "MIDI Music Playback." This should be seen by any XP user. If I click the drop down for "Sound Playback" for example, I get the output devices on the MOTU that I have described earlier. If I click the drop down for "Sound Recording" I get the input devices I have described earlier. For me, all my MIDI ports are available (including the MOTU) under the "MIDI Music Playback" drop down.
I think somehow the driver did not do it's magic and make all the ins and outs available.
Splatterbass, if you have all the ins and outs available, please check your control panel as I have described above and tell me what you see. Thanks.

In DP you have to set the studio size, which basically gives the software the number of voices you need. If there aren't enough voices enabled some of the inputs and outputs cannot be used. Does your software have an option like this? In DP it's under Setup>Configure Audio System>Configure Studio Settings.

I'm not sure what DP is but it seems to be your sequencing/production program like Cakewalk (Sonar). In my program, Cakewalk, all inputs are enabled. The only choices that I have are the same ones that are listed in the XP control panel that I stated earlier.
I'm pretty sure that this is not a CakeWalk problem but is actually a problem with XP being able to access the 828 properly since the control panel lists the same ins and outs as Cakewalk.
I have tried to reinstall the XP drivers from the disk that came with the 828 but that did not work. Tonight I will see if MOTU has any new drivers.
MOTU customer support said that it was Cakewalk, but I am not convinced. I have ordered Sonar 7 and will try that and let everyone know.
I appreciate all help to date.

Figured it out!!!!! Woohoo!!!!
Well finally after days I figured out how to make all my inputs and outputs available: the appropriate check boxes must be checked/unchecked in the MOTU Audio Console.
Fix:
Open the MOTU Audio Console. Click the General tab. Check "Enable full Wave support for legacy (MME) software. (Less efficient)." Uncheck the box "Enable Multi Channel Wave Sychronization (recommended)."
Now, the following ins and outs are available:
Inputs:
MOTU Mix1 1-2
MOTU Analog 1-2
MOTU Mic/Guitar 1-2
MOTU SPDIF 1-2
MOTU Analog 3-4
MOTU Analog 5-6
MOTU Analog 7-8
Outputs:
MOTU Phones 1-2
MOTU Analog 1-2
MOTU Main Outs 1-2
MOTU SPDIF 1-2
MOTU Analog 3-4
MOTU Analog 5-6
MOTU Analog 7-8
Of course all the ADAT channels are available too if the Optical In and Out choices are made on the 828mk2 tab.
Note: the MOTU Audio Console must be closed for you to "see" your ins and outs in the Control Panel.
I hope this helps everyone!

It certainly helped me! I've been struggling with this problem for a while and MOTU's TechLink team haven't helped.
Thank you
