How to process a drum machine w/ DP alone - no preamp

Post by slipstytch »

Lookin for advice on how to process an emu sp-12 with what I've got.

-Motu ultralite
-Emu sp-12
-DP 4.61
-geetar w/ lotsa boxes (direct usually, my music time is most often at night while the house is asleep )
-roland sh-101 for bass/psy on an old MXR limiter pedal and envelope filter

There are 2 not so great preamps on the ultralite but I reserve them for guitar and keys. A favored way to record these days is to play along w/ the sp-12 running while looping guitar and keys in Polar and sending hats, etc. from the sp12 through a Z.Vex Wah Probe (absolutely wicked).
I'm basically really diggin' on playing everything together much like an acid musician would accept I play the instruments too. It amounts to some kind of D+B/J-funk/atmo-trance good time.
I have only been recording/sequencing for 10 months of my life and have soooo much to learn  .

Back to topic, the SP12 sounds alright through the pre's but to make music like described above the SP doesn't get pres - so it's gotta be done in the box.
Remember I'm a noob to processing! And I don't have money to spend on new gear for a while, so what would you do with the SP12's BD, HH, and SD once in DP4.61 w/ no outboard pre's?
(not to be rude) Just to restate for clarification's sake (for the in a hurry reader):
How do I process the sp-12 with DP only?

Yes I will use my ears and put hard work into the advice given, please lay it out to me like i'm an absolute clueless noob.

Thanks Unicorn People! :D

Try DP's "PreAmp-1" -- it isn't perfect, but it comes w DP and you will probably put it to good use.

thx for the response emulatorloo, just got back from tweaking on preamp1 for a couple hours....it's gonna take some time for sure.
I really need to figure out how to MIDI map a controller in DP, the mouse kills the fun in no time....

yeah mouses suck..especialily track pads. at least for editing dp. you got 80 bucks you can get a wacom bamboo pad. or learn dp's short cuts. which is like going 88 in a delorean.
