Vocoders?

If I buy the VST ORange VOcoder, do I need and sepcial VST wrapper for it to run with DP 5.12 in a Power Mac G5 2.5?

Or, will it come with it;s own vst translation so it will work on it;s own?

I may be wrong, but I think you will need a VST wrapper for any plugin that does not come with an AU version. I don't believe that Orange Vocoder has an AU version, especially now that it is owned by Digidesign. I'd love to get my copy of the plugin active in DP, but I'm not much interested in fiddling around with VST wrappers.

Hmm..Can anyone shed light on this. Do VST wrappers make DP less stable?
I know that I can;t get any pluggo stuff to work, even with the wrapper the simple freewares came with. I am hoping a more pro wrapper that I PAY for will work, allow vocoder to work, and not make DP unstable...

Whaddaya mean? Pluggo stuff also comes in AU format. I have both the pluggo and hipno collections working just fine in DP.

Just by chance, I happened to stumble across this little blurb in a Sound on Sound article tonight:

DP has long been able to host VST-format plug-ins, courtesy of third-party software 'wrappers'. One of these,
which has always taken a really robust and reliable approach to the task, is FXpansion's VST-AU Adapter, and
it's now available in a v2.0 version that is compatible with both Power PC and Intel Macs. Costing £55 (or
£27.50 if you already own version one), VST-AU Adapter converts VST plug-ins into Audio Units entirely
independently of DP, unlike Audioease's VST Wrapper, which works'on the fly'. Amongst other things, this
allows you to rename plug-ins and choose under what name they appear in DP, which is superb for managing
sprawling plug-in pop-up menus in the Mixing Board. The v2 Adapter doesn't perform miracles, though ••” if
you're running it on an Intel Mac you can't feed it Power PC-only VST plug-ins, and vice versa. But it is a heck

I've been using audioease's VST wrapper in 5.12, OSX.4 on both a G4 and G5 with no problems.

I have the MicroKorg with the vocoder and it works fine. Never really got the Orange vocoder to work the way I wanted. Probably just me.

Thanks for posting those links cridarco. I really enjoyed listening to the audio demos "Play the Vocoder" and "Become True" by Favrice Gabriel at: http://www.eiosis.com/elsvocoderfgsongs

In my opinion, those are fantastic examples of what a vocoder can do for a vocal track. Very Wonderesque! The coolest stuff doesn't happen until those songs are well underway (especially in the second one), so try to hear out the full audio samples before switching tracks.

As part of my preparatory work to make sure I won't have any orphaned products that I care about if I switch to an Intel Mac soon, I reviewed NI Vokator this weekend, and decided I could live without it (it was dropped as of Komplete 5). Along with the also-dropped Spektral Delay plug-in, I am very unhappy with the overall audio quality and what seems to me a focus on rather gimmicky features vs. just getting the basics right.

This led me to a review of other options, and I was absolutely blown away with the creamy, analog-sounding Eiosis ELS Vocoder! My current computer isn't up to the task so I would wait to buy it after a new computer, but I was able to audition enough of its features and minimise audio glitches for an overall evaluation. The audio quality is superb, it is very flexible in its routing and intuitive, and covers ALL of the basics. There is a warmth and analog smear that is far more appealing to me than the more digital-sounding results on my Korg hardware (first MS2000 series, now RADIAS), and it also seems easier to control dynamics and avoid distortion with the ELS plug-in.

It would be nice to be able to do a shootout with Orange Vocoder, and maybe by April 2008 when it supposedly will be released in AU format, that will be possible.

As I mentioned in the separate and more recent thread on the new VirSyn vocoder plug-in, my impression is that it too is an excellent product with incredible versatility and good audio transparency (without digital harshness), and is different enough from ELS Vocoder to complement it rather than requiring a choice.
