hi everyone!
got a problem. i have to finish a recording session on my rig (digiperformer) that was started on somebody elses. the problem is, aside from not doing the whole thing myself, the previous engineer uses cubase. so my question is, if he sends me his cubase files, can i open them in digital performer to finish the multitrack recording? if not, any ideas that might be better than recording on top of a wav. of the whole song(s)? any advice would be rreally really appreciated.
thanks all,

The age old question. Answer - the Universal File Transfer system.
Call the engineer and ask him for the files in this format -
1. Play enable all MIDI tracks, and the conductor/tempo track in Cubase, from bar 1 beat 1 to wherever the project file ends, and "Save As" a Standard MIDI file TYPE 1. The file name should end with a ".MID", as in "CubaseSong.mid".
2. Export all the audio files out, one at a time, each file should be from bar 1 beat 1 to wherever it ends. Files can be .WAV or AIFF format, hopefully they're 24-bit.
3. Burn the ".mid" file and the audio files to a disc and send you the disc, overnight by FedEx if possible (or via FTP site).
4. On your end, open the ".mid" file in DP.
5. Import the audio files into DP.
6. Create corresponding tracks in DP for each audio file, then drag each audio file into its corresponding DP audio track.
7. "Save As" a DP project. You can't save the '.mid" file as another Standard MIDI File, because SMF files can't contain audio.
8. You're now ready to complete the project in DP.

Depending on your version of DP, you may also be able to export an OMF from Cubase. DP 5.12 has reportly been having some issues with OMF's but 5.11 worked ok.
BUT You can only import an OMF from Cubase if it only contains Mono audio tracks. If there's a single stereo audio track DP will come up with an error and won't open it. You could split them into mono tracks in Cubase (fairly easy from memory) or export them in the manner described in the post above, then delete them before doing the OMF export.
Also, make sure you also export a MIDI file, because OMF will not transfer tempo & meter data.
