Is Classic dead?

Post by James Steele »

Just installed Leopard. Classic appears to be dead. Icons for OS 9 apps in the dock appear with a circle with line through it symbol indicating it is unavailable. Did Leopard kill Classic mode and did I not get the memo about this?

Dead as a coffin nail, it be:

Apple confirms no Classic support in Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5)
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?sto ... 4141811643

MLC posted some info in another thread remindiing us about Apple's intent to drop Carbon support for 64-bit apps under Leopard. Cruel or premature as it may seem, it fits that retaining Classic as an OS9 to OSX stop gap utility would be a contradiction to Apple-- even where it's an inconvenience to users and developers.

Yeah... I see why they're letting it go. It came as something of a shock to me as I hadn't read about this before. I'm keeping my old G4 Sawtooth in storage "just in case."

I just want to play the guitar.

All of this geek tweaking is starting to wear on me.

Sorry... no details yet. I got into a long conversation on the phone so haven't done much testing. It seems "about the same" as Tiger in terms of how it feels. I'm getting used to the new folder look also. Coverflow seems cool, and oddly enough more useful that I had imagined, but for some inexplicable reason certain JPEG files appear pixelated, even though they are large enough that they should not.

I bet some mac loving software engineers will cook up a solution. For example this software engineer came up with a way to run OS 9 apps on the intel macs (which never had any classic support)

Who knows, may even work on Leopard.
