828 + 8 pre on the same time
hi
i just bought two motu devices.
1 828mkII usb2.0
1 8pre FW
i installed the 8pre driver, osx 10.4.? could recognise it very easily, and logic 8.0 aswell.. sowell for the 8pre
then i instaled the driver for the 828, and now everything for the 828 is going well, but the 8pre is neither recognised in logic, nor the the audio MIDI setup of osx, nor the sound setup of osx..
Howcan i make OSX and finally Logic recognise both devices with all audio and MIDI inputs..
i dont plan to input the 8pre via adat to the 828, but i want to runthe 828 via usb and the 8pre via FW.
thanks.

Have you gone into Audio/MIDI setup to see if they both show up there? Is there somewhere in Logic that you can set up and select the hardware? In DP, you can make an aggregate device in the hardware setup that would enable both devices.

hi
i managed to setup an aggregate device in the audio MIDI configuration of MAC OSX, which recognises both devices, and logic can find this aggregate driver in the audio settings of logic. So far i got all my ins and outs...
BUT!!! when i start recording, even just one single track, logic crashes...
Maybe its a bug of logic 8.0. but i assume the aggregate driver is not set up well....
recordintg various tracks from one single device with its own driver works flawless..
Anyone has experience in setting up this aggregate driver for two differnt devices??????
am working on it and will post it on the logic forum, will keep you updated... THX

Is there a particular reason you don't want to connect the 8Pre via ADAT? I have mine linked together that way.(8Pre>lightpipe>828MkII>FW>PowerBook) Shows up as ADAT ins in CueMix, and it clocks together perfectly. The only difference would be using USB instead of FW. Have you tried it that way?

i am getting closer
it seems to be a problem with logic recording to my external usb2.0 drive. ill check if i can record with the aggregate driver to the internal HD!!
If this is the Problem what is a good forum to post this. i think the problem is with the HD. Western Digital MyBook 500GB
the reason i dont connect via adat is ill get a second 8pre to daisy chain both of them on FW, and the 828 via usb, so i get 24 inputs!!
I am thinking about changing the 828 to a third 8 pre, to do it all with one driver and one conection (FW)...

OK, that may be the problem. The 828mkII USB isn't playing nice with your external USB drive. There may not be enough bandwith to run both on the USB bus. How about lightpiping the 828 into the 8Pre? I like the 828 because you get 10 analog inputs (2 mic pres, 8 line in), but 3 8Pre's would be very sweet. I've got 18 analog inputs with my setup, but 8 more sure wouldn't hurt my feelings.

so, the aggregate driver works very fine. just recorded 24 treacks with 828 on USB and 8pre on FW to the internal (system) drive.
i disconnected the 8pre and connected the external drive via FW and then recorded from the 828 on usb to the external drive on FW... It crashes
So. My external drive sucks.
so far i just have problems with this Western digital Mybook
Nothing really works, and its so slow
Where is a good forum to post this problem??
Which external drive are you using, and which interface connection??
thanks!!

ok, the big news...
i am just recording 14 tracks to my external HD..
but maybe i should also mention that Logic and Finder was completly out of order for about 15min after starting the record session, i just left it, then after these 15 min suddenly it began...
I wonder if the musicians can wait that long?? maybe they might use the time for practise??
no honestly, anybody got any idea or same experience???
which HD do you use for recording?? any way to set it up??
my HD is sooooooooooo slow, even in Finder

I'm using Neptune FW drives from OWC. 7200rpm. I've never had problems with them.
Have you tried repairing permissions? Sometimes this fixes all sorts of weird behaviour.

ok and here is the final answer.
the HD was originally in FAT32
i started the disk utility from Mac OSX and made two Partitions each formated in Mac OS Extended Journaled.
For some reason it made the two partitions but kept the old system = FAT32... I finally recognised it when i pressed aplle+i for the info on the harddrive...
so this time i chose delete in the disk utility, this time it really is Mac OS extended and this time it works fine....
Thanks for all the anwers so far!!!!!
