Mach Five (and MX4) vs NI Komplete

Post by Randallx »

Hi All,
New guy here. Just getting back into setting up my bedroom studio after a few years (got married, banged out two kids, bought a house, etc.). I'm upgrading my computer (new Macpro 2.66 last week), I just ordered the DP 5 upgrade and a PCIe card yesterday. Anyway, I'm looking to get into some VI's as I've always been a hardware guy. Now, I like sticking to the same company if/when possible so I was considering MachFive and MX4. After pricing these out (over $700.00 for both), I'm wondering if the NI Komplete package isn't a better deal as it seems like there's a lot more bang for the buck going that route for not a whole lot more money. Anyway, I was hoping to get some opinions on this as I've been out of the loop for a few years. Thanks in advance for your help and advice! Randy

My biased uninformed 2 cents worth

Mach Five v.2 has a ton of bugs, it's slow and it crashes a lot. I wish it were not the case I waited 2 years for it!.( i am trying to use it in protools I should add) I don't know about MX4. NI stuff is pretty good but it's finicky installing it.The layout and manuels are very technical, a bit user hostile and sort of "german" in there interfaces.
Motu tech support is a bit slippery, NI seems OK but I think it is email or internet only which slows the process way down but I could be wrong.

Must be M5 in PT, because it's working well in DP (with one known bug, changed loop points don't get saved, but I expect that to be fixed rather quickly..) MachFive is wonderful, I've been using it for years now, and v2 is a big improvement. I don't own MX4, but it's supposed to be an awesome and very underrated synth...

However, it's hard to beat Komplete: Reaktor alone is a never-ending supply of amazing instruments and effects, Kontakt is one of the most-supported sampler formats available, and incredibly customizable with its scripting engine, Absynth is amazing, and then there's Akustik Piano, and Elektrik Piano, and FM8, and Guitar Rig, and and and... it's $1k street, but MX4 and M5v2 ends up being around $750, so if you can cough up the extra $250, I think that's a no-brainer...

I have Mach Five and MX4 and some of the NI VI's.

Mach Five is great and a lot of fun to use. MX4 is a tremendous synth too.

All of my NI VI's are quite good and play well with DP and Logic on my system.

There is a lot of variety in the KOMPLETE package.

If it is really only 250.00 more than mach5 plus MX4, then I think you pretty much have to go with Native Instruments Komplete.

I have both Mach5II and MX4

M5 is very stable in DP and is easy to learn , more "mac" than Kontakt.

MX4 is a very nice Softsynth , very underrated. Sound's fat , the fattiest VI I've heard. It has a couple of bugs with save feature and volume but it should be updated anytime now. Been a while since the last one....

Komplete seems a nice package.......
