software sampler for os9 & dp 3.11

Post by markmarshall »

Hey all.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced software sampler that works in DP3.11 under OS9. I'm on a G3/450.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hey.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Unfortunately, I can only buy V2 and then downgrade - setting me back nearly 500 smackers. This takes me out of the "reasonably priced" range - at least for me. :)

I got Mach5 v 1 for around 100.00 on ebay not too long ago. -- w registration transfer w motu and ilok license transfer. Just have to make sure that;

-- the seller is legit
-- seller is willing to help you get the license transfered w ilok and motu if need be (may not be necessary if they never registered w Motu or iLok)

Reason is the way to go IMHO.

There are 2 samplers included. One NN19 is single layer, the other NNXT is multi layer.

It is extremely CPU friendly.

I'm quite shure Reason 2.5 is OS9.

You will get a bunch of other synth and some rather good effects (apply only to internal sounds).

Another vote for reason, that was the way I worked in OS9 for years.

Yep...go with Reason 2.5

Just thought I'd chime in and agree with the others who suggested Reason 2.5. I used it for two years with my Mac G3/450. It was the only software sampler I could find that would run under OS 9 (I seem to remember that MachFive either required OS X or a faster processor).

I used CDXtract to convert all my old Roland and Akai libraries. Worked well for me.

I was going to suggest Reason as well and then I remembered all of my OMS/Free MIDI nightmares. It's been a while so I can't remember the exact issues, but I think that Reason required OMS while my Tascam US-428 required Free MIDI to properly work with DP. The combination caused many crashes and rendered the setup almost unusable. I think that using a MOTU MIDI interface may have fixed the problem, but then OSX came out and I forgot about all of that. It might be something to look into before you take the plunge if you decide to go the Reason route.

Yes, there were definitely issues! I had to run an OMS emulator in order for Rewire to be happy and link to DP, but everything worked fine for me. I didn't have the other OMS gear you referred to, though.

The OMS emulator should still be available online somewhere. And I should reiterate that I'm recommending Reason 2.5, not 3.0. I'm afraid it might be difficult finding 2.5 these days.

First off - thanks to everyone for the informative posts.

And yep - 2.5 IS hard to find.

If anyone has a LEGITIMATE version 2.5 they'd like to part with, please let me know. Do NOT even approach me with "backup copies" or cracks, please.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Reason probably is best. OMS might be a pain.

Kontakt 1.x could be OK, but probably a bit more fidgety than Reason- worked OK except multiouts weren't supported on the earliest versions putting a strain on CPU if multiple instances were needed. (Or was it standalone in some of those versions (as opposed to a plugin)?)

Other OS 9 samplers you might see on EBAY:

Unity has been discontinued and was buggy- so avoid it unless you get it almost free and are a gambler or have time on your hands.

Softsamplecell worked OK (maybe it was it TDM mode only?) and was simple, but you would have to translate to another program (Kontakt) if you upgrade to OSX in the future.

And there is always hardware EMU EIV's etc.

Chicken Systems translator also can do some translations- into Reason seemed pretty good- AKAI EMU and Samplecell into Kontakt seemed more prone to be mapped at the wrong octive, not have a suitable release time and such things that require little tweaks on each patch.

I believe you could use "VSampler"

I used it along time ago, so I don't know where its at today usability wise.
