How to setup a BLA traveller + ada8000?
I'm going to buy an ada8000 to use along with my (soon to be) BLA traveller.
I've never messed with anything optical before, much less with clocking things going on.
I know the ada8000 doesnt come with any cables.
What do I need to buy/do to get them to play together?
I'm assuming for sure an optical cable(does quality matter here, ie: monster cable), but do I need to plug any other cables in to get them to 'clock' together?
I think the ada8000 has a switch to define wether its slave or master, but does that require another connection to get it to work.
and then to get DP to see it, I'm assuming I just pick the adat inputs from the assignment menu and everything is the same?
thanks,
rodrigo

When I used the ADA8000 with the 896HD we also used a BNC cable to hook up the clock sync...Im not sure if the traveler has that or not but other than that it was pretty simple to use.
Then just activate the ADAT in the "motu adio setup"...

60% Of the time...it works EVERYTIME!!

i know this is an ancient bump
but after moving international, and unpacking, i finally have a band to record again
im trying to run my ada8000 into my traveller
the only way i seem to get input is if i set the ada8000 to master
i have 1 optical cable going from the ada8000 to the traveller
i only purchased 1 cable since i though it was all that i needed
is the setup im running going to run me into problems with sync/timing?
(im only using the inputs of the ada8000) or should i buy another optical cable and set it to slave?

You need to hook up both optical ins and outs to clock the ADA8000 to the Traveler via ADAT. Or, you can hook up the BNC word clock connectors (another optical cable is easier/cheaper).
Your current setup is OK, but you will have to manually set the clock rate on the ADA8000 to match your session. With the Traveler as the master, the converter clocks will follow your session rate. Plus I would think that the clock on the Traveler is more precise (isn't that what that whole BLA thing is all about).

Your current setup will work if you set the clock switch on the ADA8000 to master 44.1 or 48 and then in MOTU Audio Setup, sync the Traveler clock source to ADAT optical. That way they are both using the same clock so you shouldn't get any clicking/popping, etc. Just make sure you set the ADA8000 to the right sample rate (44.1 or 48 ) to match your session rate in DP. When you get your new cable, set the ADA8000 to ADAT and the set the Traveler to internal.
thanks guys
i recorded yesterday, it seemed to work fine with the ada8000 set to master, as well as the traveller, no clicks or anything
i did get some VERY wierd behavior, if i plugged anything into channel 5-8 on the traveller, it would be recorded onto any tracks that were coming from the BLA
i dont know if this was a wierd effect of having only one optical cable, and both set to master, of if it was a logic8 bug (all inputs showed up fine in cuemix)
it made for a very interesting recording session as i had to play (drums) without anyone playing scratch tracks

I've got an ada8000 running with an 828mkII. I have one optical cable running from the ada8000 optical/adat OUT to the 828 optical IN. If you want to use the ada8000's line outs, you'll need another optical cable running the other direction. If you use that second optical cable, it looks like you could use it to slave the behringer to the motu. I don't use the behringer's outs, so instead, I'm using a BNC cable from motu word clock out to the behringer word clock in, and setting the behringer to slave to the motu.
When both units are powered up, there are no further software settings required for the units to see each other, and it all works like a charm.
Current Black Lion mods don't include a clock upgrade. Did yours get modded before they discontinued the clock upgrade?

ADA8000 Monitoring
Is there any way to monitor any of the inputs of the ADA8000 when hooked up to the MOTU 896? I have mine setup as ADAT out of the ADA8000 to the ADAT in on the MOTU, I can see all the 8 inputs in the VST Connections list, but I cannot monitor any of the inputs.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

One idea (and not necessarily a cheap one,) and I don't know for certain it will work. Get a used 828mkII, and hook the ADA8000 to it via ADAT, and hook the 896 to the 828mkII via firewire. That would give you a whopping 18 mic pres, and an additional 8 line level inputs, and you could monitor via cuemix.
