firmware update?

Post by rawhedrex »

Hi everyone - I'm having pretty huge problems with my new motu ultralite running on vista 64 - audio hardly ever comes out of it - and when it does it's in pops and stutters - the only way i can do this is by putting the latency ridiculously high

I thought i would try updating the firmware, but i cant seem to find any firmware files on motus website - or the means to update the unit itself...

can anyone help me? - I really dont want to have to take the unit back, but I'm at my wits end.

Do you know which firmeware you are currently running?

There is an aug.3 (1.1.5) update available, but of course you must go to theregistered area of the motu website.

By the way the ultralite will not work if you use more than 2 gigs of ram...not in my experience anyway.

2 gigs o.k., more...not so o.k.

thats insane!!! - theres only 2 reasons I'm running vista 64 - and one of them is to utilize all of my ram!!!

i managed to update the firmware - and nothing - made no difference,

I am running 4 gig of ram in this box - but i think this interface is going back before i yank out half the ram....

sorry motu - but thats inexcusable.

thanks for your help

Tell me about it.

My daw worked great until I added another 2 gigs, then nothing.

So far I am quite unimpressed, but then I have better converters in other gear.

I went out and got a laptop to use this thing but so far whenever I use the wallwart power supply I get unacceptable noise.

sounds like your firewire device is not compatible. i had a TI chipset on an adaptec card that was still not compatible.

i am using a SIIG PCIE firewire card. works fine here on vista 64.
i did have a few issues changing between apps with cuemix open but updating the firmware to 1.1.5 fixed that.

MIne is a siig pcie card as well.

Oddly enough I can use the ultralite on the fourpin TI built in port on my lappy if I use the wallwart on the motu...still get odd noise spikes though very eratic.

I'm disappointed to say i took the unit back and swapped it for a focusrite saffire 26 io

the drivers work perfectly - and the unit has been flawless in it's operation thus far.

I think motu really need to get their act together - that experience was not at all positive....

I will keep this unit, its ok on 32 bit stuff, but I will get an edirol or something I can use on USB2.

I think firewire and anything other than a MAC is not all that good.

USB 2 is another 80 megs faster than 1394a, 1394b is still to beta with audio.

MOTU Clicks & Pops and latency issues

Post by rvriccardi »

I've also experienced the issues above. I decided the inability to set a latency to less than 8ms was impossible with my older system so I purchased a 64bit machine with 4GB ram. NO DIFFERENCE! After almost two years of clicks and pops from my MOTU 828mkII, I'm looking elsewhere for my audio interfaces.

So basically the firewire card didn't matter (it's a different cipset in the new computer). More RAM didn't matter and moving from a 2.9GHz machine to a 3.2Dual-Core machine made no difference. :x

I have managed to get rid of the pops and clicks:

I use the onboard FW on the laptop (its a TI) even though its only a 4 pin connect. The pain in the arse I had to go thru was discoverying that the laptop would not discover the motu if it was running on batteries, I suppose the fw port even though it does not provide power out still needed more than battery power to see devices.

I then run the motu with its own power supply, I'm in Vista Ultimate 32 on the laptop.

I also have to make sure the power supplies are not sending a ground loop to one another, ie: I plug into a clean power outlet for each one.

If they are on the same circuit and its not power conditioned I get all kinds of noise.

Not an optimal situation but for remote recording it works ok.

64-bit - is that Vista or XP? Vista has high inherent system latency that will prevent low latency operation

You can test your system latency with http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

I'm using Vista, and the way I record latency is not an issue, for the record I also use the laptop in live situations running NI Guitar Rig 3 thru the ultralite, it works fine for about 2 hours then I need to reboot for some reason, currently I don't care that much but I will sort it out soon.
